A Range Rover gliding up to a hotel forecourt and a Defender pointed at the dunes for the weekend are two very different rentals, and both sit under the Land Rover badge we hand over every week. We deliver any of them free across the city, so the real question for a Land Rover rental in Dubai isn't where to collect the keys, it's which one fits what you're actually doing. Most of our luxury SUVs never leave tarmac, and that's fine. This page helps you decide whether you want the plush Range Rover image, the genuinely capable Defender, or a right-sized Evoque for the city.
Which Land Rover the trip actually calls for
Start with how the car gets used, because the badge covers a wide spread.
The full-size Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are about arrival. Quiet cabin, commanding seat height, the kind of car that looks right outside a Downtown hotel or a Palm villa. They'll cross the desert if you ask, but almost nobody rents one for that. People rent them for Sheikh Zayed Road, business meetings, and a weekend that stays on smooth roads. If that's you, the Sport is the sharper drive and the standard Range Rover is the more comfortable lounge.
The Velar and the Evoque are the city pair. The Evoque is the one we'd point most visitors toward for a Dubai week: small enough for Marina and mall parking, easy on fuel, and it still carries the badge. Two adults and a few bags fit comfortably; it gets tight with four people and a full week of luggage, so size up if the group is bigger. The Velar sits between Evoque and Range Rover on space and price of presence, and it's the looker of the range.
Then the Defender, which is the one model here where the off-road talk is real. The 110 seats the family and runs the Hatta tracks or a proper dune session without drama, with the ground clearance and locking diffs to back it up. The shorter 90 is the toy: two doors, tighter rear, more fun than sensible for a family. If your weekend genuinely leaves the asphalt, the Defender is the pick, and it books out fast on long weekends and around the cooler months.
Discovery and Discovery Sport cover the in-between. The full Discovery is the honest seven-seater of the family, the one to take when you actually need the third row up and the boot still has to hold a buggy. The Discovery Sport is a five-seater with occasional jump seats, closer to the Evoque in feel than to its bigger namesake.
Our honest steer
For a city break or a work trip that stays on roads, rent the Evoque or a Range Rover and don't pay for capability you won't use. For a family that needs seven real seats, the Discovery. For the desert weekend or the Hatta drive, the Defender 110, booked early. The Range Rover Sport is the one we'd take if we wanted a single car to do the airport run, the highway miles, and look the part outside dinner.
Delivery, the airport, and the heat
We bring the car to you anywhere in Dubai and collect it the same way, at no charge, so an Evoque can be waiting at your hotel or a Defender outside your villa the night before a desert run. We also meet arrivals at both DXB and DWC, which matters with a full-size Range Rover and a trolley of luggage at the end of a flight. There's no security deposit to tie up, the Salik tag is fitted and the toll charges are handled, and the rental runs with insurance and unlimited mileage included, which is the part you want sorted before an Abu Dhabi day trip.
One Dubai-specific note on these cars: the cabin cooling holds up in a 45-degree July, and the panoramic roofs on the Range Rover and Velar come with blinds, so the glass roof isn't the sweatbox renters sometimes worry about. The light interiors do show desert dust, so if you're driving sand, the darker Defender trims are the practical call.
FAQ — Common Questions Answered.
Can I take a Land Rover off-road or into the desert?
Yes, and the Defender is the one built for it, with the clearance and traction to handle Hatta tracks and dune driving when you let some air out of the tyres. The Range Rover and Discovery are capable too, but most renters keep them on tarmac, and we'd rather you took the Defender if sand is the plan. Tell us at booking that you're going off-road so we set the car up and confirm the cover for it. Reckless dune driving that damages the vehicle won't be covered, so keep it sensible.
How old do I need to be to rent a Range Rover or Defender?
You'll generally need to be at least 25 for the high-end Range Rover and Defender models, while a smaller Evoque or Velar may be available from a slightly younger age. The premium models also tend to ask for a clean licence and a year or two of driving history. Bring your passport, licence, and Emirates ID if you're a resident. We'll confirm the exact age line for the specific car when you book it.
What licence do I need as a tourist?
You can drive on a valid licence from many countries if you're a visitor, and an International Driving Permit alongside it covers you for the rest, so carry both if your home licence isn't in English or Arabic. UAE residents need a UAE licence rather than a tourist setup. We check the licence at handover, so have it ready when we deliver the car. If you're unsure whether your country qualifies, send us a photo before you fly and we'll tell you.
How are Salik tolls and traffic fines handled?
Every Land Rover we rent comes with a Salik tag fitted, so the gates charge automatically and we settle the tolls with you, no stopping or top-up needed on your side. Traffic fines from the RTA and police are linked to the car, so any caught on camera during your rental are passed on to you afterwards. Drive to the limits and you'll never see one. The big Range Rovers are quick and quiet, which is exactly how people drift over the limit on Sheikh Zayed Road without noticing.
Can I drive a rented Land Rover to Oman?
Cross-border trips to Oman are possible with these cars, but you need to arrange it with us in advance so we can issue the right paperwork and confirm the insurance extends across the border. Turning up at the border without that documentation means you'll be turned back. A Defender or Range Rover suits the Musandam roads well if that's the trip. Ask us when you book and we'll sort the permissions and any extra cover before you set off.
