Where it runs out is people and luggage at once. Put four adults in it with bags for a weekend in Abu Dhabi and you'll feel the squeeze in the rear and the boot both. For that, size up. As a runabout, it's the cheapest way into the brand and the easiest to park, and the cabin cools fast after a July car park.

Tiggo 7 Pro: the family default

For most families renting in Dubai, the Tiggo 7 Pro is the one we'd point you at first. It's a true five-seater with room for two adults and two kids plus a proper boot, so a week's worth of luggage goes in without folding anything down. The cabin is the strongest part of the car: a big touchscreen, soft-touch surfaces and the kind of kit list you'd normally pay a lot more for elsewhere. That's the Chery argument in one car, more equipment and space than the badge usually buys.

It's front-wheel drive and built for tarmac, which covers nearly everything a visitor does here, Sheikh Zayed Road, the Abu Dhabi run, the airport loop. It's lighter than the SUVs, returns better fuel figures on a long cruise, and the deep boot takes suitcases easily, even if it can't carry tall items the way the Tiggos can.
