You spend the week doing ordinary Dubai things in comfort, then point it at the dunes on Friday. That's the whole argument for this car.

Engine: the inline-six does the job

Heat, parking and the Dubai realities

The cabin cools quickly for its size. It's a big glasshouse, so give it a moment in the shade if you can, but you won't be sweating to Downtown.

Size is the one thing to respect. At over five metres long and two metres wide, the Defender 110 fills a standard mall bay and needs care in the tighter Marina multi-storeys. The cameras and sensors help, the high seating helps more, but if your week is all underground parking and nothing off-road, a smaller crossover is the easier rent. Speed bumps and ramps, on the other hand, are a non-event with this much clearance.

For the open road it's in its element. The E11 cruise is relaxed, a DXB or DWC airport run is comfortable for the whole crew, and the run out to Hatta or onto the sand is where it pulls clear of every soft rival. The air suspension, low range and all-wheel-drive system are real, not badges.

Skip it if you'll never leave tarmac, park only in tight city basements, and just want space and comfort. In that case a softer full-size crossover is cheaper to run and easier to thread through a packed Marina garage. The Defender earns its keep when you actually use what it's built for.
