They handle the school run, the mall ramps, and the full Sheikh Zayed Road commute better than most sedans, because you sit higher and load bags without stooping. What they will not do is sand. Soft dunes swallow a front-driver in about a minute, and recovery costs land on you.

The genuine 4WDs are a shorter list. The Nissan Patrol is the one that books out first, and the Land Rover Defender covers the same ground with a nicer cabin. If your week includes a desert camp, the Hatta wadi tracks, or anything a tour guide would call "off the tarmac," book from this end and say so when you reserve. If your week is malls, meetings, and one drive to Abu Dhabi, the Creta does the same job for a fraction of the fuel.

SUV rates track size and capability more than badge. As we write this, the soft-roaders, a Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos or Mazda CX-5, run AED 132 to 255 a day, and they cover the city-and-highway life most renters actually have. Seven-seat crossovers like the Sorento and Palisade sit between AED 271 and 423. The genuine 4WDs cost more to rent and far more to fuel: a Land Rover Defender from AED 559, a Nissan Patrol around AED 774 to 793, and the statement end, a Mercedes G63, from AED 1,191. The size question is really a luggage question

Five-seat SUVs like the Tucson and CX-5 take two adults, two kids, and a normal holiday's luggage without drama. The trouble starts with the third row. In most seven-seat crossovers the last row eats the boot, so seven people ride with luggage on laps. If you're five people plus a week of suitcases, you want a genuinely big car: a Patrol or a Chevrolet Tahoe swallows the cases with the third row up, and that's the honest cutoff. Four or fewer with bags, any five-seater here works. Six or more with bags, go big or add a second small car, which sometimes parks easier anyway.

What an SUV costs you in town

Nobody tells you the downside at booking, so here it is from the desk. A Patrol-sized car is a squeeze in the older parking decks around DIFC and Deira, and valet slots at some restaurants flat-out won't take it. Fuel is the other line: a big V8 4WD drinks roughly twice what a Creta does over the same week. None of this argues against the big cars, they're the best long-haul machines we have. It argues for matching the car to the actual week. Renters who size the car to their one desert day, then spend six days parking it Downtown, always wish they'd swapped.
