Bmw X4 2023 - start from 466 AED / day

A coupe roofline on a midsize SUV is a particular taste, and the BMW X4 2023 is built for people who have it. We rent the X4 in Dubai from age 18, while most of the market makes you wait until 21, so a younger driver who wants something premium and quick off the line can actually get the keys. This is the sharper, sportier sibling to the boxy X3: same running gear, lower and more aggressive shape, a little less room in the back and the boot. If you care more about how a car looks and corners than about maximum cargo space, it earns its place. If you don't, there's a smarter pick, and we'll get to that.

What the numbers actually tell you

The xDrive30i runs a 2.0-litre turbo four making 252 hp through an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. It's quick for the class, 0 to 100 in 6.3 seconds, with a 240 km/h limiter you'll never legally need here. On Sheikh Zayed Road that turbo torque matters more than the headline figure: merging into fast traffic and overtaking at 120 happen without drama, and the AWD keeps it planted when a summer downpour turns the E11 greasy.

Boot and back seats: be honest before you book

This is where the coupe shape costs you. The X4's boot holds 525 litres, which sounds generous and mostly is: two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags fit fine for an airport run to DXB or DWC. The catch is the sloping rear glass. Tall, boxy items that an X3 swallows whole have to go in at an angle, and the load opening is shallower up top. Fold the rear seats and you free up to 1,430 litres, enough for a flat-pack run or a week of luggage for two.

The rear seat is the real compromise. Headroom back there is tight for anyone over about 1.85 metres because the roof drops away, and a six-footer behind a tall driver will brush the lining. Two adults are comfortable for a cross-town trip; three across for a long highway leg is a squeeze. There are rear air vents, which matter more here than the brochure suggests. Parents will want to note child seats are required for under-fours under RTA rules, and the X4's wide door openings make fitting one easier than the coupe styling implies.

Living with it in the heat

Park an X4 in open sun in July and the cabin hits oven temperature within minutes. The good news is the climate system pulls a 45-degree cabin down to something bearable in three to four minutes, and the rear vents mean back-seat passengers aren't left waiting. The leather seats get genuinely hot, so the first minute is unpleasant regardless of how strong the AC is, that's physics, not the car. Crack the windows for ten seconds as you set off and it clears faster. If you're handing the kids the back row on a school run, those rear vents are the feature that earns its keep.

Parking, bumps and the daily grind

At 1,918 mm wide the X4 is a proper midsize SUV, and you feel it in older Marina towers and tight mall bays. The standard parking sensors and camera do most of the work, but a Dubai Marina ramp or a packed Mall of the Emirates level still wants a careful line. Ground clearance is 204 mm, plenty for speed bumps, sandy shoulders and steep ramps, so you won't be wincing at every community speed hump. This isn't a dune car despite the AWD badge, leave the soft sand to a proper 4x4, but for tarmac, the odd graded track and the everyday city it sits high enough to feel unbothered.

Fuel and the running cost reality

The marketing economy figure is optimistic. In real Dubai driving, mostly stop-start city with bursts of highway, expect somewhere around 9 to 10 litres per 100 km from the 65-litre tank. That's a comfortable 600-plus km between fills on a mixed week, so most renters refuel once, maybe twice. It takes 95 octane happily. Two costs are yours to carry: Salik deducts about 4 to 6 dirhams every time you pass a toll gate, and any RTA fine during your rental comes back to you, so the speed limiter built into the car is doing you a favour.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the X4 if you want a premium midsize SUV that drives and looks sharper than the herd, you're usually carrying one or two passengers, and a fast, composed motorway car matters more to you than a square boot. It's a genuinely good companion for a couple touring Dubai who want presence without going full Range Rover money.

Skip it and take the X3 if you regularly seat tall adults in the back or pack the boot to the roof, you get the same engine and feel with proper headroom and a more usable cargo hold. And if the badge isn't the point and you just need space and AC for a week, a mainstream midsize SUV will cost less and do the family job without complaint. The X4 is a want, not a need, and that's exactly why the people who want it love it.
