Few small crossovers turn heads the way this one does, with its slim daytime lights, body cladding and colour-blocked look that stands out in a car park full of grey sedans. That look is most of the reason people rent a Hyundai Kona in Dubai, and we hand one over with no security deposit frozen on your card, so a two-week booking doesn't tie up your money. The Kona gives you a raised seat and real character in a footprint that parks like a hatch. What it won't give you is family-SUV space. This page settles one decision: whether the Kona's size suits your week, or whether you should size up to the Creta.

What you're actually renting it for

The Kona sells itself on design and the higher view, and for a couple or a single driver that's a fair trade. You sit above the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, you read the lane ahead earlier than you would in a low hatch, and you arrive somewhere looking like you chose the car rather than took whatever was left. Two people with a normal week of luggage fit comfortably, and the cabin pulls down fast from a July afternoon, which matters when the car's been sitting in an open lot at the beach.

It's built for the city and the highway, nothing rougher. The mall ramps at Dubai Mall, the tight basement bays under Marina towers, the school-run speed bumps around Jumeirah: all easy. If that's the shape of your trip, the Kona is a genuinely good little Hyundai and you can stop reading here.

Where the space runs out

Be honest with yourself about the back of the car before you book. The rear seat is fine for two adults on a short hop to dinner, snug for three, and tight on legroom behind a tall driver. The boot is modest, sized for two soft bags or a large grocery run, not a family's holiday suitcases. Put four adults in with a week of hard cases and you'll be stacking bags on laps.

So treat the Kona as a two-person car that occasionally carries four light. If your week regularly involves the back seat full and real luggage, this isn't the one, and the next section is for you.

Kona or Creta

This is the call most renters are weighing, so here's the plain version. Rent the Kona when it's mostly one or two of you and you want the bolder-looking car that parks anywhere. Step up to the Creta the moment rear-seat room or boot space becomes a regular need.

The Creta is the bigger Hyundai crossover. More rear legroom, a noticeably larger boot that takes proper suitcases, and a calmer ride on the long stretches to Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. You pay for that with size, and the Kona slots into tight bays the Creta has to think about. If you're collecting people from DXB with full bags, or you've got kids and their gear, the Creta earns its extra metal. If you're a couple doing brunch, the beach and a Hatta day trip with an overnight bag each, the Kona is the smarter, better-looking pick.

Against a plain hatchback the trade is simpler. The Kona costs you a little space over something like an i20, and in return you get the raised seat, the higher view and a car with real presence. For a lot of renters that styling alone settles it, and that's a perfectly good reason to choose it.

Hybrid or petrol, and what it won't do off-road

The Kona comes as a petrol and as a hybrid, and which one you get depends on what's free in the fleet when you book. Tell us if you specifically want the hybrid and we'll do our best, but don't count on it for a fixed date. For most Dubai trips the difference is small in practice: fuel is cheap here, and a week of city runs plus the odd highway drive won't dent your budget either way. If you're doing high mileage, a daily Abu Dhabi commute or long days out, the hybrid's better economy starts to add up.

One thing neither version is built for is the desert. The Kona is a front-wheel-drive crossover for sealed roads, and soft sand or wadi tracks will get it stuck. It also isn't covered for off-road use. Kerbs, ramps and graded surfaces are no problem. For dunes or a real desert weekend, point at a proper 4WD and keep the Kona for the city and highway work it's good at.

Picking up the car

We bring the Kona to your home, hotel or office, or to the DXB and DWC terminals, washed and full with the Salik tag already fitted. Delivery and collection across Dubai are free, no deposit is held, and mileage is unlimited, so a last-minute run to Hatta doesn't change anything. At handover you'll need your passport, your licence, and the card the booking's under. Residents drive on a UAE licence and Emirates ID. Visitors use a home-country licence with an International Driving Permit, or a GCC licence. We'll walk you round the car, note any marks together, and you're away in a few minutes.

The Kona is one of the harder small cars to guarantee on short notice, because the colours people want for the look sell out first. If a specific colour matters to you, book early, and book a day or two ahead anyway on long weekends and during DSF.

FAQ — Common Questions Answered.

Should I rent the Hyundai Kona or the Creta for my Dubai trip?

Rent the Kona if it's mainly one or two of you and you want the more striking, easier-to-park car. Move up to the Creta as soon as rear passengers or luggage are a daily part of the trip, because its back seat and boot are clearly bigger. A simple test is your airport run: if people are arriving with full suitcases, take the Creta. If you're a couple with a bag each who care about how the car looks, the Kona does everything you need.

How much fits in the Kona's boot and back seat?

The boot holds two soft bags or a big grocery shop with the rear seats up, and the back seat is comfortable for two adults on short trips. Three across the back works for a quick hop to dinner but not for the hour to Abu Dhabi. Four adults plus a week of hard cases is more than this car should carry, and you'll end up with bags on laps. If you need both the rear seat full and real luggage room, size up to the Creta.

Can I rent the hybrid Kona, or do I get the petrol version?

You can ask for the hybrid and we'll try to match it, but availability depends on what's in the fleet for your dates, so we can't promise a specific one. For most renters the day-to-day difference is small, since fuel is inexpensive here and a normal week's driving costs little either way. The hybrid starts to pay off if you're covering high mileage, like a daily Abu Dhabi commute or long days touring. For city use and the odd highway run, the petrol Kona gives you nothing to miss.

Can I take the Kona off-road or into the desert?

No, keep the Kona on sealed roads. It's a front-wheel-drive city crossover, not a desert car, and it isn't covered for off-road or soft-sand driving. Speed bumps, mall ramps, kerbs and graded tracks around the city are all fine. For dune drives or a desert weekend you want a proper 4WD, and we can hand you one of those for that part of the trip.

What do I need to drive the Kona in Dubai, and how are Salik and fines handled?

You'll need your passport, a valid licence and the payment card on the booking. Visitors drive on a home-country licence with an International Driving Permit, or on a GCC licence, while residents use a UAE licence and Emirates ID. The Salik tag is already fitted, so toll gates are billed through us and passed on without you stopping or topping up. Any traffic fine during your rental is registered to the car and settled through your booking, and we'll tell you if one comes in.
