The Hyundai Kona 2020 we rent in Dubai is the version most people don't expect: the 1.6-litre turbo with all-wheel drive, 177 hp, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds. That makes it genuinely quick for a small economy SUV, and a lot more fun than the rate implies. We can have it at your door in one to two hours, and you can rent it from 18 where most desks hold out for 21. The argument here is simple: if you want a compact crossover that's actually entertaining to drive and confident in the wet or on a dusty road, the turbo Kona is the one to take. If you only ever potter around the block, you're paying for performance you won't use, and we'll be honest about that.
The 1.6-litre T-GDI puts out 177 hp and 264 Nm through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and unlike most cars in this class it drives all four wheels. On Sheikh Zayed Road that means overtaking is instant rather than a planned event, and merging into fast traffic never feels like a gamble. The AWD isn't there for dunes, but it does give you surer footing on a wet flyover after rare Dubai rain, and steadier grip on the loose, sandy edges you sometimes meet on the way out to Hatta.
It's a small, eager car that likes to be driven. For a single person or a couple who enjoy the act of driving, that's the appeal in one line.

Be clear-eyed about size. At 4.17 metres the Kona is one of the smaller cars in its class, so this is a two-plus-occasional crossover, not a family hauler. Two adults up front are comfortable. Two more in the back are fine for a city trip but will feel the lack of legroom on a long run. The boot is the pleasant surprise: 544 litres with the seats up is generous for the footprint, swallowing two large cases and a soft bag for a couple flying into DXB. Fold the rear seats and you get 1297 litres, enough for a weekend of gear. For a family of four with a full week of holiday luggage, though, you'd want something longer.
The turbo is more frugal than its pace suggests. On the combined cycle the Kona returns about 7.3 litres per 100 km, and with the 50-litre tank that's a real 600-plus kilometres of mixed driving. Push it hard and the figure climbs, as it would in any turbo, but driven normally it's one fill for a typical week of errands, commutes and the odd highway run. It takes 95-octane.
A small cabin is your friend in a Dubai July. Parked in open sun the Kona gets brutally hot like anything else, but there's less air for the AC to chill, so it recovers fast. The front vents pull hard and the cabin is comfortable within a few minutes of setting off. Rear vents are limited at this size, so on a 45-degree afternoon the back seats take a little longer to cool than the front. For two people up front, that's a non-issue.
The Kona's size is its other party trick. At 4.17 metres it slots into the tight multi-storey bays that defeat bigger crossovers, the Marina ramps are no drama, and U-turns are easy. The 170 mm of clearance clears speed bumps and mall lips without a wince. A couple of Dubai practicalities to keep in mind: Salik tolls run to your account as you pass the gantries, RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, and a child seat is required for under-fours.
Rent the turbo Kona 2020 if you're a single driver or a couple who want a small SUV that's quick, grippy, and easy to park, with a boot bigger than the body suggests. The performance and the AWD are the reasons to pick this over a plain economy hatch, and rent-from-18 puts it in reach of younger drivers most desks turn away.
Size up if you regularly carry four adults or pack for a family week, where the short cabin and tight rear seats start to bite. And if performance means nothing to you and you just want the cheapest A-to-B for the week, a basic non-turbo crossover will save you money on the rate. For a driver who wants some pace and confidence in a city-friendly package, though, this Kona is a genuinely fun rental.
