Need a compact SUV for a Dubai week without the running cost of a big body-on-frame 4x4? We rent the Kia Sportage 2021 with 250 km a day included, delivered to your door, and it sits in a useful spot: tall enough to give you a clear view over Dubai traffic, small enough to thread a Marina car park, and roomy enough that four adults aren't fighting for knee room. This is the previous-generation (QL) shape, so the cabin and screen feel a year or two behind the redesigned Sportage. What you're really deciding here is whether a sensible, comfortable five-seater at a budget rate beats paying more for newer tech or a bigger boot. For most city-and-highway weeks, it does.
The Sportage is front-wheel drive with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an automatic gearbox, so it's an easy, no-fuss car to live with for a week. There's no all-wheel-drive option on this one, which matters: it's built for tarmac, not dunes. If you've pictured taking it off a graded track near Hatta or onto soft sand, this isn't the car. On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 it cruises happily, holds 120 without strain, and has enough in reserve for a confident overtake. It's not quick, and it doesn't pretend to be. The reward is a relaxed, planted drive that's genuinely comfortable on a long airport run or a daily commute across town.

For four adults and a week of city living, the boot is honest and usable. You'll get two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags in without folding anything down, which covers a family of four landing at DXB or DWC with a week's luggage. Push to a fifth passenger and several big cases and it gets tight, the way most compact SUVs in this class do. Drop the rear seats and the load space opens right up for a furniture run or a costco-style stock-up. If your group is five adults with full airport luggage every day, size up to a midsize or a seven-seater. For everyone else, the Sportage swallows more than its footprint suggests.
Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a car that's been parked in the sun is brutal for the first few minutes. The Sportage's air conditioning is strong and pulls the cabin down quickly once you're moving, helped by a cabin that isn't huge. Front vents do the heavy lifting fast. There are rear vents too, which keeps kids in the back comfortable on a longer drive rather than waiting for cold air to drift back. The trick in July is the same as with any car: crack the windows for ten seconds before you set off and let the hot air dump out. After that the system copes well.
At 4.48 metres long this is a compact SUV, not a large one, so it parks like a sensible car rather than a barge. Marina towers and mall multi-storeys with tight bays are manageable, and the higher seating gives you a better read of where the corners are. The 172 mm of ground clearance handles Dubai's aggressive speed bumps and steep mall ramps without scraping, and the raised view is a real comfort in heavy traffic. U-turns are easy. It's an easy car to place, which is half the battle in a city this busy.
On the official combined figure of 7.9 L/100 km the 62-litre tank is good for close to 780 km. Real Dubai driving, with the AC working hard and stop-start traffic, lands you nearer 9 to 10 litres per 100 km, so plan on roughly 650 km of practical range. For a typical week of errands, commuting and a couple of airport runs, that's one fill-up, maybe a top-up before you hand it back. Petrol here is cheap, and a 2.0-litre petrol SUV is reasonable on fuel for its size, so running it for a week won't sting.
Salik tolls are charged automatically as you pass the gantries, and those tolls are the renter's responsibility, as are any RTA fines during your rental. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, so factor that in if you're travelling with small kids. None of this is unusual for Dubai, but it's worth knowing before you set off.
Rent the Sportage 2021 if you want a comfortable, easy compact SUV for a Dubai week of city errands, commuting and airport runs, with room for four adults and their bags and a high, confident view of the road. It's a no-drama pick at a budget rate. Skip it if you care about the latest screen and driver tech, where the redesigned Sportage is a clear step ahead, or if you need real cargo space and seven seats, where a larger SUV earns its keep. And if your plan involves sand or a desert track, this front-drive car isn't the one. For everything most renters actually do in Dubai, though, it's a smart, sensible choice.
