Most economy crossovers send their power to the front wheels and leave you to manage. The Hyundai Kona 2020 we rent in Dubai is the all-wheel-drive version, which is the reason to pick it: surer footing on a wet flyover after rare rain, steadier grip on the sandy edges out toward Hatta, and a planted feel on the loose stuff that front-drive rivals don't have. We can have it at your door in one to two hours, and you can rent it from 18 where most desks won't budge below 21. The argument is straightforward. If you want a small SUV that's confident and quick rather than just cheap, this turbo Kona is the one. If you only ever potter around the block, you're paying for grip and pace you won't touch, and we'll say so.
The Kona's all-wheel drive isn't a dune toy, so don't book it expecting to cross soft sand. What it does is keep the car composed where a front-drive crossover starts to feel vague. On a damp E11 ramp during one of Dubai's occasional downpours, the Kona puts its power down cleanly instead of scrabbling at the front. On the dusty, gravel-edged roads you meet heading out of town, it tracks straight and steady. For a driver who values that confidence, it's the whole pitch in one line.
Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre turbo petrol making 177 hp and 264 Nm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That makes the Kona genuinely quick for an economy SUV, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds. On Sheikh Zayed Road overtaking is instant rather than planned, and merging into fast-moving traffic never feels like a gamble. The gearbox can be a touch hesitant from a dead stop in crawling traffic, which is the dual-clutch trait, but once you're moving it shifts crisply and the engine pulls hard.

The turbo is more frugal than its pace suggests. Driven normally it returns about 7.3 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle, and with the 50-litre tank that's a real 600-plus kilometres of mixed running. Drive it hard and the figure climbs, as it would in any turbo, but for a typical week of errands, commutes and the odd highway blast it's one fill. It takes 95-octane.
Be clear-eyed about size. At 4.17 metres the Kona is one of the smaller cars in its class, so think two adults plus occasional rear passengers, not a family hauler. Up front it's comfortable. Two more in the back are fine for a city trip but will notice the legroom on a long run. The boot is the surprise: 544 litres with the seats up is generous for the footprint, enough for two large cases and a soft bag for a couple flying into DXB. Fold the rear seats and you get 1297 litres for a weekend of gear. For a family of four with a full week of luggage, you'd want something longer.
The small footprint is the Kona's other trick. At 4.17 metres it slots into the tight multi-storey bays that defeat bigger crossovers, the Marina ramps are no drama, and U-turns are easy. The 170 mm of clearance clears speed bumps and mall lips without a wince.
Heat is the other thing to plan for from May to September. Parked in open sun the Kona gets brutally hot like anything else, but the small cabin means less air to chill, so the front vents bring it down within a few minutes of setting off. Rear vents are limited at this size, so on a 45-degree afternoon the back takes a little longer to cool than the front. For two people up front, that's a non-issue.
Salik tolls run to your account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, so keep to the limits on the E11. A child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit on request. None of this is unusual here, but it's worth knowing before you set off.
Rent the turbo Kona 2020 if you're a single driver or a couple who want a small SUV that's quick, grippy and easy to park, with a boot bigger than the body implies. The performance and the AWD are the reasons to choose it over a plain economy hatch, and rent-from-18 opens it to younger drivers most desks turn away.
Size up if you regularly carry four adults or pack for a family week, where the short cabin and tight rear seats start to bite. And if pace and grip mean nothing to you and you just want the cheapest A-to-B for the week, a basic non-turbo crossover saves money on the rate. For a driver who wants some confidence and some speed in a city-friendly package, this Kona is a genuinely good rental.
