Hyundai KONA 2024 - start from 129 AED / day

We hand over the Hyundai Kona 2024 across Dubai with no deposit on the table, which is the first thing that surprises people who've rented elsewhere. It's a subcompact crossover with five seats, a high driving position and a 1.6 turbo engine, and it sits in that useful gap between a city hatchback and a full-size SUV. This page is about who that gap actually suits. If you want the easy parking and raised view of an SUV without paying for size you won't use, the Kona makes a strong case. If you regularly carry four adults with luggage, it doesn't, and I'll tell you where to go instead.

What the Kona is really for

The honest pitch is a couple or a small family who want to sit up high, see over traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, and slot into tight bays without a reversing drama. The cabin feels bigger than the footprint suggests, with a clean dash and proper headroom up front. Two adults up front and two kids behind is comfortable for a week of mall runs and beach trips.

Where it tightens is the back row with three adults. Knee room is fine, not generous. For four grown adults heading to the airport with a week of cases each, you're fighting the space, and that's the conversation worth having before you book.

How the engine feels in Dubai traffic

The 1.6 turbo with 177 hp is the part of this car people underrate. It's quick for a small crossover, 0 to 100 in 7.9 seconds, and that matters more than the number suggests when you're merging onto the E11 or pulling out for an overtake. Plenty of cars in this price bracket feel out of breath above 100. This one doesn't. It cruises at highway speed without working hard, and the all-wheel drive gives a planted, secure feel when a sandy gust crosses the road.

The trade-off is fuel. The official combined figure is 7.3 L/100km, but a Dubai week of short hops with the AC fighting the heat will push real consumption higher. With a 50-litre tank you'll still get the better part of a week between fills on mixed driving, and a full tank covers a Dubai-to-Abu-Dhabi return with room to spare.

Luggage, boot and what fits

This is where the Kona quietly does well. The 544-litre boot is generous for the class and takes two large cases plus a couple of soft bags without folding anything. Drop the rear seats and you've got 1,297 litres, which swallows a flat-pack run or a paddleboard.

For a couple's airport pickup it's genuinely roomy. The pinch point is people plus luggage at the same time. With the back seat full of passengers, boot space handles their bags but not a full family's worth of hard cases. Match the load to the trip and you'll rarely feel short.

Parking, ramps and the daily reality

At 4.16 metres long it's an easy car to place. Marina towers and mall multi-storeys with their tight bays and steep ramps are no drama, and the high seating helps you judge the corners. The 170 mm ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and parking ramps without the scrape you get in a low sedan, while staying low enough that getting in and out is a simple step, not a climb.

It's a road car, not a dune machine. The all-wheel drive helps with grip and stability rather than serious off-roading, so think wet underpasses and loose road edges, not Hatta rock trails. For light graded tracks and beach-access roads it's fine. For real desert, it isn't the tool.

Heat and the AC

The cabin is on the smaller side, which works in your favour when the car's been baking in a 45-degree car park. Less air to cool means the AC pulls the temperature down faster than in a big SUV, and the front vents are strong. Rear passengers get airflow from the front, fine for two kids on a short hop, though a child in the back will feel it warmer than someone up front on a long afternoon run. Park in shade when you can and crack the windows to dump the worst of the heat before you set off.

A few Dubai rules to keep in mind

Salik tolls run on the renter's account, so each gantry you pass on Sheikh Zayed Road or the bridges gets billed back to you. Any RTA fines during your rental are yours too, so keep an eye on the speed cameras. Seat belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can add to the booking.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Kona 2024 if you're a couple or a small family who wants a higher view, easy parking and a genuinely punchy engine, with a boot that handles airport luggage better than its size hints. For city errands, beach days and the occasional highway run, it's one of the easiest cars in this class to live with for a week.

Size up if your trip is four adults with full luggage, regular long-haul highway stints with a packed cabin, or any real off-road ambition. A Creta gives you more rear-seat room for not much more money, and a Tucson is the call when you need full family space and a bigger boot at once. But for the way most people actually use a rental here, the Kona hits the sweet spot, and the no-deposit booking makes it an easy yes.
