A hot hatch you can actually live with

At roughly 135 mm the GTI sits lower than a standard Golf, so take the steepest Marina and mall ramps and the sharper humps slowly and at an angle to keep the front lip clear.

The dual-clutch gearbox is brilliant once moving but can hesitate in stop-and-go crawl, a half-second gather before it takes up drive from rest. You learn its rhythm within a day. On running costs the news is good: the 50-litre tank and a real-world 7 to 8 litres per 100 km give you well over 550 km between fills, so a week of city driving rarely means more than one visit to the pump. Heat and the cabin

A compact cabin is an advantage in a Dubai July. There's less air to chill, so after the car has baked in a car park and the dash reads 48 degrees, the front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you're moving. You feel cool air fast when you climb back in. There are rear vents for back-seat passengers too, which small hatches often skip. Don't expect a big SUV's spread of cold air across the cabin, but for its size the GTI copes well with the worst of the summer.

Who it's for, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Volkswagen Golf GTI 2023 if you want one car that's fun on an open stretch of E11 and still sensible for the airport run, the school drop and the weekly shop. For a couple or a small family who'd rather enjoy the drive than just endure it, this is the sweet spot, and it's far more usable than any sports coupe at the money. Look elsewhere in two cases. If you want a soft, silent cruiser for long comfortable days, the firm ride and the DSG's low-speed manners will nag at you, and a sedan will suit you better.
