If your Dubai week is mostly errands, tight parking and the odd airport run, the Suzuki Swift 2023 is about the cheapest sensible automatic you can rent, and we'll drop it to your door within one to two hours. This is a small economy hatchback built for the city, light on fuel and easy to thread through traffic, and the argument for it is straightforward: for one or two people doing daily city driving, almost nothing costs less to run or parks more easily. Where it runs out of road is space and the open highway, and we'll be honest about both so you can tell whether it fits your week or whether you should size up.
The Swift is small, light and quick to respond, which is exactly what you want when you're parking ten times a day and doing constant U-turns. The 1.4-litre engine makes 140 hp, which is genuinely punchy for a car this size, so pulling out of a side road or merging into traffic is no effort at all. The steering is light, the turning circle is tight, and the whole car feels happy darting between lanes in Karama or slotting into a gap a bigger car would have to pass on. For a resident running daily errands or a visitor who just needs cheap, reliable wheels, it gets on with the job and asks almost nothing of you.

This is where the Swift earns its keep. A small, light hatch with a willing engine sips fuel in city use, so even with the AC running hard you'll go a long way on a tank. The flip side is the tank itself is small at around 37 litres, so the range between fills is modest in absolute terms. In practice that means a quick top-up here and there rather than a single big fill, but the cost each time is low, and a week of city errands won't make a dent in your budget. For pure running cost on daily city driving, little else in the fleet beats it.
Be realistic here. The boot is about 265 litres, which is small. Two people with a large case each plus a soft bag will fill it, and you'll likely have a bag on the back seat. For a solo traveller or a couple travelling light, an airport pickup at DXB or DWC is fine. For a family of four with full suitcases for the week, this is the point where I'd tell you to look at a sedan or a small SUV instead. The rear seats fold if you need to carry something bulky, but as a four-up luggage hauler the Swift isn't it.
Dubai summers sit in the mid-40s, and a small car has one real advantage here: there's less cabin to cool. Park the Swift in the sun and it bakes like anything else, but the AC pulls the small interior down quickly once you're moving, and the front vents hit hard. Don't expect rear climate vents or layered control at this price, so a fully loaded car on a long midday run takes a bit longer to get comfortable in the back. For one or two people doing city hops, the cooling is more than enough.
At well under four metres long, the Swift is one of the easiest cars to park in Dubai. Tight multi-storey bays, the narrow ramps at Marina and mall car parks, and busy parallel spots are all simple, and the light steering makes it effortless. The roughly 140 mm of clearance handles standard speed bumps fine, though you'll slow for the sharper ones.
The open road is where the Swift shows its limits. It'll merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road and hold 120 without drama, but above 100 it feels busier than a bigger car, and a strong crosswind or a long highway haul with a full load is where you'll wish for more weight under you. For the daily commute and city errands it has exactly enough. For long, fast motorway weeks it's working harder than you'd like.
A couple of practical points: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are the renter's responsibility, and seat belts are mandatory in every seat, with a child seat required for under-fours. The 250 km a day allowance comfortably covers city use and most airport routines.
Rent the Swift 2023 if you're one or two people who want the cheapest easy automatic for a week of city driving and tight parking. It's frugal, nimble, and genuinely fun to flick around town, and for that job it's hard to beat on cost.
Size up in two cases. If you're carrying four adults with luggage or doing daily airport runs with a full car, a sedan like the Corolla gives you the boot and the room the Swift can't. And if your week leans heavily on long highway stretches, a larger car feels more planted and less busy at speed. For everyone doing the city-and-errands shuffle, though, the Swift is the smart, cheap pick.
