A Tesla Model Y 2023 spends most of its rental week on three jobs in Dubai: the commute, the mall and school run, and the trip out to the airport. It does all three well, and it's quieter and quicker doing them than anything else we hand over near this money. We can have one outside your door in one to two hours, on a debit card, and you can book it from 18 where most desks in this city start at 21. What decides whether it suits you isn't range and it isn't pace. It's one dimension. This is a wide car, and the parking you actually have access to settles the booking.

The width is the number to check first

The Model Y is 1978 mm across with the mirrors folded and 2129 mm with them out. A standard Dubai mall bay gives you around 2.4 to 2.5 metres of painted box, so with the mirrors extended you have a hand's width of air on each side. In the newer malls and the Downtown car parks that's fine. In an older multi-storey in Deira, or one of the tighter residential basements around Marina, you'll fold the mirrors on the way in and reverse rather than nose in. The car folds them automatically at addresses you visit often, which sounds like a gimmick until you've used it twice a day for a week.

Rear visibility is the other thing to know before you drive off. The back window is small and steeply raked, so the view over your shoulder is narrow and you end up trusting the reversing camera and the sensors instead. That takes about a day. Once you do trust them, placing this car in a bay is easier than the numbers suggest, helped by a 12.1 metre turning circle that is tight for a 4.75 metre SUV. U-turns on a two-lane road need one clean movement, not three.

Ground clearance is 167 mm, which is road-car territory rather than SUV. Speed bumps in villa communities and the steeper ramps at older malls are fine if you take them slowly and at a slight angle. At 1624 mm tall it slides under every 2 metre height barrier in the city without you thinking about it.

How it behaves once you're out of town

The battery sits flat under the floor, and you feel that the first time you take a fast sweeper on the E11. The car stays level and planted where a taller petrol crossover would lean and then settle. At 120 it's quiet enough that the passengers in the back can talk to you without raising their voices, because there's no engine noise underneath any of it and the front glass is laminated.

Overtaking is the part petrol drivers notice most. There's no downshift and no pause. You ask for the gap and the car is already in it, which makes a busy stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road much less tiring than it should be. Traffic-aware cruise control comes as standard on these cars, and on the evening crawl towards Jebel Ali it is the single feature you'll use most. Set it, let the car hold the distance, and steer.

One thing works backwards compared with a petrol car. Motorway speed costs an EV more range than city driving does, not less, because there's no regeneration happening and the air resistance climbs. A run to Abu Dhabi and back is roughly 280 km and sits inside your 300 km daily allowance, but do it in July with the AC on hard and you'll arrive home wanting a charger. Extra kilometres past the daily 300 are AED 0.5 each. Salik is charged as you pass the gantries and any RTA fine issued during the rental comes back to you, and with this much instant torque the speed limit needs half an eye more often than you'd expect.

Keeping it cold in July

Park a car in open sun at two in the afternoon in Dubai and it becomes an oven, glass roof or not. The Model Y has a feature worth knowing about here: cabin overheat protection keeps the interior below a set temperature for hours after you've walked away, drawing on the battery to do it. Leave it on and you come back to a car that's warm rather than genuinely dangerous to sit in. Starting the climate from the app on the way down in the lift covers the rest.

The panoramic roof is fixed, tinted and coated against infrared, and there's no blind to pull across it. Rear passengers get more light on them than the front pair, though the heat coming through is less than the sheer area of glass suggests. Cooling once you're moving is fast, and the rear vents at the back of the centre console mean nobody in the second row is waiting twice as long as you are.

The vents themselves take some getting used to. There's a single slot running across the dash and you aim the airflow by dragging it around on the touchscreen, so give yourself two minutes with it before you set off rather than groping for a plastic wheel that isn't there.

Who we'd hand it to

Book the Model Y 2023 if you're here for a week or more, you're two to four people, and your driving is city plus real motorway distance. It's the most relaxed long-distance car on our fleet at this price, and it costs a fraction of a petrol SUV to run if you have somewhere to plug in overnight, whether that's a wall box at home or a DEWA point near the office.

Skip it in two situations. If you park daily in an old, tight basement and reversing a wide car into a narrow bay is going to spoil your week, take something narrower. And if you're carrying six or seven people, this is a strict five-seater with no third row, so you want a bigger SUV instead. If you like the size but have no charging plan at all, a petrol crossover like a Sportage rents for less and asks nothing of you. Everyone else should book it, then spend the first ten minutes in a quiet car park learning where the corners are.
