The cheapest way to run a week in Dubai might be an electric one, and the Tesla Model Y 2023 is where that maths works. This is the standard rear-drive Model Y, a five-seat electric SUV that turns a normal Dubai week into zero fuel stops, quiet instant pace, and a lot of usable space. If you have somewhere to plug in, the running cost is the argument: no pump visits, no fuel bill, just charge it where you park. We rent it from 18 when most desks make you wait until 21, and we take debit cards and pay-on-delivery alongside the usual options. The one thing to settle before you book is charging, and we'll be straight about that below.
The rear-drive Model Y isn't trying to be the quickest Tesla, and for a rental that's fine. It still pulls away instantly and silently, with no gearbox hunting for a ratio, so city driving feels effortless and a highway merge takes a flick of your foot. The 62 kWh battery gives a rated range up to around 466 km, which in real Dubai conditions lands lower, more on that shortly. Across a week of Marina, Downtown and airport runs, you're charging instead of fuelling, and that's where the savings sit. If you'd be paying for petrol in any comparable SUV, the Model Y quietly undercuts it every day you drive.
Comfortably. The boot is deep, with a second well under the floor that takes the soft bags most cars leave on a seat. Add the front frunk, good for a carry-on or the charging cable and a backpack, and you've got more loading room than the outside size suggests. Four large cases plus a few medium bags is realistic for the five-seat layout, which covers a family landing at DXB or DWC with a full trolley. The flat floor and tall tailgate help too, so a pram or a week's airport haul goes in without a fight, and the rear seats fold for the odd bulky item.
This is what renters most want straight talk on. The rated range is a lab number. In Dubai, with the AC working hard against summer heat and a mix of highway speed, plan closer to 350 to 400 km between charges. That still covers a normal day of city errands and an airport run several times over.
Charging is where you plan ahead. If your hotel or building has a charger, you plug in overnight and forget about it, the way you charge a phone. Without that, you'll lean on public and Supercharger stations, which exist across the city but mean a stop on your schedule. For a Hatta day or a drive out of town, map your charging before you leave, because an EV punishes the unprepared on a desert highway with no plug in sight. If charging is going to be a daily puzzle for you, a petrol SUV is the saner pick.

Dubai summers test every car, and EVs have their own quirks. Park the Model Y in the sun and the cabin gets hot like any car, but the AC pulls it down fast, and you can pre-cool it from the app before you walk out, so you step into cold air instead of an oven. The big glass roof is tinted and coated, though on the worst afternoons you'll still feel the sun through it. The battery handles the heat fine for daily use. You might notice slightly slower charging when the pack is very hot after a long highway stint, which is normal and never an issue for a typical city week.
The Model Y is easy to place. The cameras and sensors make Marina ramps and multi-storey bays low-stress, and the turning circle is tighter than the body looks. Ground clearance is modest, so take steep mall ramps and speed bumps gently rather than at pace, but you won't scrape on normal roads. A few admin notes: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, the same as any car here, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit on delivery. The minimalist cabin divides people. Almost everything lives in the central screen, which feels odd on day one and natural by day three, and the ride is on the firm side, so you feel road joints more than in a softer crossover.
Rent the Model Y 2023 if you can charge where you stay and you want the lowest-cost, lowest-fuss way to run a Dubai week. For city errands, airport runs and the odd highway blast, it's spacious, quick, quiet and cheap to run with no pump stops all week. It rewards the renter who's comfortable with the screen-led approach and pre-cooling from a phone.
Skip it if charging will be a daily headache, if you're planning long off-grid drives without a charging plan, or if you simply want a conventional SUV with physical buttons and a softer ride. If you want more outright punch, the Long Range dual-motor version steps up the pace, but for most renters the rear-drive car is the smarter spend, and we'll have it at your door in a couple of hours.
