Tesla Model Y 2023 - start from 319 AED / day

We can have a Tesla Model Y 2023 outside your building in Dubai inside one to two hours, on a debit card, with the no-deposit option if you want it, and you can book it from 18 rather than the 21 most desks insist on. That part is easy. The part worth thinking about before you book is where you plan to plug it in. An electric SUV rewrites what a week of driving costs you, and this is a big, quick, quiet car for the money. Whether it suits your trip comes down to one question, and it isn't range.

What it costs to run, and where you plug in

Start with the money, because that's the reason most people try one. A week of ordinary Dubai driving in the Model Y costs a small fraction of the same week in a petrol SUV this size. On DEWA's domestic EV tariff a full charge lands in the region of AED 30 to 40, against well past AED 200 to fill a comparable petrol crossover. Across seven days of school runs, mall trips and a commute into town, that difference is real money rather than a rounding error.

Range is rarely what limits you. Depending on the version, Tesla claims somewhere between 455 and 533 km on the WLTP cycle, and you should treat that as a lab figure. In July, with the AC pulling hard from the second you get in and some motorway running in the mix, plan on roughly 350 to 420 km from a full battery. Your booking includes 300 km a day and any extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each, so on a normal week you're charging every second or third day.

Plugging in is the honest part. If the building you're staying in has a charger, this car asks nothing of you at all. The onboard charger takes up to 11 kW from an AC wall box, so you plug in when you get home and it's full before you leave. DEWA's Green Charger points sit in malls, hotels and public car parks across the city, and the app shows you what's free before you drive over. Tesla's own Superchargers are the quick option, taking you from low to most of the way back while you eat lunch.

If you have nowhere to charge overnight and you're only here for two or three days, take a petrol SUV instead. Hunting a free charger on a Friday evening at a busy mall is a poor use of a short trip. Over a week, with a plug where you sleep, the maths and the hassle both swing the other way.

Space, luggage and living with the width

This is where the Model Y quietly beats most five-seat crossovers. There are 854 litres behind the rear seats, and a good chunk of that is a deep well under the boot floor that takes a large case standing on its own. Add the front boot for soft bags and charging cables. Four adults with proper airport luggage genuinely fit for a DXB run, which is more than you can say for most cars this shape. Fold the rear seats and Tesla quotes 2158 litres, enough for a bike, a stroller and a week's shopping at the same time.

Two adults in the back get real leg and knee room, and the flat floor makes the middle seat usable for a short hop rather than a punishment.

The catch is width. At 1921 mm across the body it's a broad car, and older multi-storey bays in Marina and Deira are tight enough that you'll be folding the mirrors and taking your time. Cameras and sensors cover you well, so it's less stressful than the number suggests, but it isn't a car you fling into a gap. The 167 mm of clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without drama when you take them sensibly. It's not a desert car, and nobody should treat it as one.

Summer heat, the glass roof and how the cabin copes

The full-length glass roof is the thing renters ask about most in July. It carries an infrared coating and performs better than it looks, but a car parked in open sun at two in the afternoon still comes back hot, and glass warms faster than a painted metal roof. The fix is the app. Start the climate from your phone five minutes before you walk out and you get into a cool cabin instead of an oven, which is a habit petrol renters simply don't have.

Once you're moving, cooling is quick and strong, and there are rear vents at the back of the centre console so passengers behind you aren't left suffering on a longer drive. Running the AC flat out does eat range, which is normal for any EV at 45 degrees. Leave a buffer on a long day and it stops mattering.

Two costs stay with you as the renter. Salik is charged as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during your rental come to your booking. Instant torque makes it easy to drift over a limit without noticing, so keep half an eye on the speed. A child under four needs a car seat by law, which we'll bring with the car if you mention it when you book.

Who should book it, and who should skip it

Book the Model Y 2023 if you're here for a week or more, you have somewhere to charge overnight, and you want serious space and pace for very little running cost. Families do particularly well in it. So do people covering long motorway distances, because it's stable, quiet and far less tiring at 120 than the price suggests.

Skip it on a short trip with no charging plan, or if your itinerary includes soft sand, where you want a proper 4x4 and nothing else will do. If the boot space isn't the point for you and older parking bays are, the Model 3 does most of this in a body that fits tight garages more happily. For everyone else, this is the most car per dirham we hand over in a week.
