What it feels like to drive here

The 2022 cars in this market are dual motor and all-wheel drive, and the first thing you notice is that there's no build-up. You press, the car goes. Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road takes no run-up and no gear to wait for, and a gap you'd normally let go becomes an easy move. Nothing in this price bracket keeps up with it in a straight line.

The bigger adjustment is regenerative braking. Lift off the accelerator and the car slows hard, hard enough that you can drive most of a day in stop-and-go traffic without touching the brake pedal. It feels odd for about twenty minutes and then it feels better than a normal car, particularly on the crawl home. Passengers who aren't expecting it get thrown around a bit, so go gentle with the right foot for the first trip.

Be honest with yourself about the ride, though. The Model Y is firm. On the larger wheels it thumps over patched tarmac and drops off the back of Dubai's sharper speed bumps with a bang that a Tucson or a CX-5 would have absorbed. Quiet, quick and composed at 120, less forgiving at 40 in a residential street. If a plush ride is your priority, this isn't the car and no amount of speed makes up for it.

Living with it for a week

Luggage is where the Model Y quietly wins. The 854 litre boot has a deep well under the floor that swallows the soft bags most SUVs leave sitting on top, and there's another 117 litres under the bonnet where an engine would be. Four adults and four cases from DXB fit without anyone holding a bag on their lap, which is not something we can say about most five-seat SUVs at this size. Fold the rear bench and you have a genuine van's worth of space for a furniture run.

Charging is the habit. Treat the claimed WLTP figure as a laboratory number and plan on roughly 340 to 400 km in July, when the AC is working through the whole drive. For most renters that's four or five days of normal city running between plugs. DEWA's EV Green Charger points are spread across the city and are free to use for a lot of drivers, malls and newer towers increasingly have their own, and Tesla's own fast chargers around the UAE will put a serious dent in the battery during a lunch. What you should not do is rent this car with no plan and no app installed. If you're staying somewhere with no charging and no patience for finding one, a petrol SUV is the calmer week.

Size-wise it's a fraction under 4.8 metres and turns tightly for what it is, so multi-storey bays and Marina ramps are fine once you trust the cameras. The 167 mm clearance clears standard bumps and mall entrances, but it's a road car with a low nose. Sand is not its territory.

The usual Dubai rules apply as with any rental. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your booking come back to you, seat belts are required in every seat, and under-fours need a child seat. Go past the 300 km daily allowance and extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each, which on an inter-emirate week is worth doing the maths on before you set off.

The glass roof, and how the cabin copes

The panoramic glass roof runs almost the full length of the cabin, it's fixed, and there's no blind to pull across it. That worries people, and it shouldn't worry them as much as it does. The glass is tinted and coated to block most of the infrared, so a July afternoon feels bright overhead rather than hot on your scalp. Rear passengers notice the light more than the front pair.

Cooling is where the electric drivetrain earns its keep. There's no engine heat soaking the bay and no idle to fight, so a cabin that's been baking in an open lot at 46 degrees comes down fast, and the rear vents mean the back row cools at close to the same rate as the front. Best of all, you can start the AC from the app while you're still in the lift. Do that on the worst days and you get into a car that's already cold, which no petrol rental in this class can offer.

Who should rent it

Rent the Tesla Model Y 2022 if you're a couple or a family of four who wants space, real pace and no fuel bills, and you're willing to spend two minutes a day thinking about where you'll plug in. For airport runs, highway miles and a week of city driving, it's one of the most useful cars on our fleet, and you can take it from age 18 where most desks in this city start at 21.

Skip it if you'll be parked somewhere with no charging access, if you're carrying six or seven people, or if you want a soft ride above everything else. A petrol SUV of the same size costs less to rent and asks nothing of you. The Model Y is worth the small adjustment, but only if you're actually going to make it.
