What a week of it costs to run

The Baleno runs a 1.5-litre four making around 103 hp and 138 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic. It's not quick, and it isn't trying to be. What it's built for is cheap, easy driving around town, and it does that well. Suzuki quotes roughly 12 km per litre in the city and 15 on the highway, so call it about 13 in a normal mixed week here, less once the AC is fighting a 45-degree afternoon and you're sitting in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic.

The back seat takes two adults for a short mall run or three kids across for the school pickup, but a 3.99-metre car was never going to give a fourth adult real legroom on a longer drive, and it doesn't. If your week regularly means four grown adults and their bags, this isn't the car for that trip.

Where the small footprint pays off is parking. At 1.75 metres wide, the Baleno drops into tight Marina tower bays and multi-storey mall spaces that make bigger cars work for it, and U-turns on a cramped ramp are a non-event. Ground clearance sits at 150 mm, enough to clear a standard speed bump or a steep mall entrance without the scrape you get in a lowered sedan, though this is a road car on road tyres and not something to point at a sandy track.

A small engine and the AC in the heat

A 103 hp engine moving a light hatchback is fine at city speeds and comfortable cruising on Sheikh Zayed Road, but ask it for a confident overtake at 120 km/h with the AC on full and a full car, and it takes a moment to gather itself. Plan your overtakes a little earlier than you would in something with a bigger engine and you won't notice the shortfall much.

The upside of a small car is a small cabin, and that works in your favour every time you climb back into one that's been sitting in the sun. There's less air to cool, so the front vents pull a baking interior down to comfortable faster than they would in a larger hatchback or an SUV. It's a straightforward AC system rather than a luxury climate suite, and at this price that's exactly what you should expect. Give it thirty seconds with the windows cracked before you set off and the rest of the drive is easy.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Baleno if you're one or two people doing city errands, a commute, and the odd airport run, and you want the lowest running cost on the lot without giving up a touchscreen and proper safety kit. It's an easy car to park, cheap to feed, and honest about what it is.

Size up if your week regularly means four adults with luggage, or if you're spending real time on the highway wanting brisk overtakes rather than planned ones. A mid-size sedan or a crossover will carry that load with less effort and barely cost more to rent. For a light, low-cost week of Dubai driving with one or two people aboard, the Baleno 2023 does the job without fuss, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys.
