The Opel Corsa 2023 comes back to us with fuel still in the tank more often than anything else on our economy row. That is not a sales claim, it is simply what the desk keeps seeing: a 44-litre tank, a small turbocharged three-cylinder, and a week of Dubai errands that barely touches either. The Corsa is also the odd car out in this class, a European supermini among Japanese, Korean and Chinese rivals, and that shows up in how it feels to drive.

Parking, ramps and the bays other cars give up on

At 4,060 mm the Corsa is one of the shortest cars we rent, and in daily Dubai use that length does more work than any feature on the spec sheet. The tight bays in older Deira and Satwa buildings stop being a negotiation. Marina multi-storeys, where the columns eat half the space the paint promises, become ordinary. You can turn the car inside a single lane on a U-turn and still have room left.

What separates it from the cheapest cars in the class is the way it steers while you do all this. The wheel weights up properly, the body stays flat through a quick direction change, and it tracks straight over broken tarmac instead of skipping. Small European hatchbacks tend to feel like this, and it is the main reason someone would choose a Corsa over a Picanto that costs less to rent.

It sits low, the way every supermini does. Take the steeper mall ramps and the sharper residential speed bumps at a crawl and approach them at a slight angle rather than square on. Nothing about this car is designed for a kerb, a sand track or a graded desert road, and front-wheel drive settles that question before you ask it.

What it does on Sheikh Zayed Road

Most economy hatchbacks in Dubai run out of ideas somewhere above 100 km/h. The Corsa does not, and this is the part of the car worth paying attention to. There is 130 hp and 230 Nm here, with the torque arriving low, so an eight-speed automatic has something to work with when you ask for a gap on the E11. It reaches 100 in around 8.7 seconds, which is quick for the class and quick enough that merging from a short slip road is a decision rather than a gamble. Overtaking a truck at 110 does not require a running start.

It stays composed at speed too, and does not wander in the cross breeze the way lighter hatchbacks can on an open stretch. For a run out to DXB or DWC with two people, it is more relaxed than the rate suggests.

Fuel works out well on the same roads. The claimed 5.4 L/100 km will not survive Dubai stop-and-go traffic with the AC at full effort, so plan for something closer to 7 in mixed use. Even then, 44 litres stretches across a normal week of city driving with one visit to the pump. Two things land on you regardless of the car: Salik charges every time you cross a gate, and any RTA fine follows the rental back to you. Your daily allowance is 300 km, with anything beyond that at AED 0.5 per kilometre, and a week of ordinary city driving rarely gets near it.

Heat, the cabin and what actually fits

A small cabin cools quickly, and in August that matters more than almost anything else. There is not much air volume in a Corsa, so after a few minutes on the move the front seats are genuinely comfortable even when the car has been standing in an open lot at 45 degrees. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to push the trapped air out, then close up and let the front vents do their work. Rear passengers rely on airflow reaching them from the front, which is standard at this level and fine for two children on a short run.

The honest limitation is space rather than cooling. The front seats are good, with a solid, well-finished dashboard that feels a class above the price. Behind them, legroom is adequate for two adults on a twenty-minute trip and tight beyond that, and the middle rear seat is a short-hop position only. The boot holds 309 litres, which in practice is one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two medium cases if you pack with intent. Fold the rear seats and you have 1,081 litres for a furniture run. Four adults arriving with four full cases will not fit, and no amount of clever loading changes that.

The other thing to weigh is equipment. Rivals in this class often hand you a bigger screen and a longer feature list for the same money. The Corsa spends its budget on how it is built and how it drives instead, which is a fair trade for some renters and the wrong one for others.

Who should take it, and who should not

Rent the Opel Corsa 2023 if you are one or two people who will spend real time on the highway as well as in traffic, and who would rather have a car that feels solid and sure of itself than one with more buttons. For a couple on a week's stay or a solo professional commuting across the city, it is the small automatic we would put our own money on.

Look elsewhere if you need the back seat to work properly. Three or four adults travelling together, a family with holiday luggage, or anyone who values a big infotainment screen over steering feel will be better served by a compact sedan or one of the better-equipped rivals in the same bracket. The Corsa is a well-made small car that happens to be good to drive. Ask it to be a family car and it will disappoint you honestly and immediately.
