Forget anything you've read quoting 4.8 litres or 280 hp. That figure belongs to the old Super Safari, a different and much older vehicle Nissan still sells alongside this one. The new V6 is quicker, reaching 100 km/h in about 6.7 seconds, and it gets there without the old car's lag, because the turbos are already spinning by the time you ask for the power. On a run out toward the desert, that shows up as an easy overtake on the two-lane stretch before the tarmac gives out, not a downshift and a wait.

What Nissan didn't touch is the part that actually gets you through sand. This generation keeps a body-on-frame chassis, four-wheel drive with a genuine low-range transfer case, and terrain modes for sand, rock, mud and snow, riding on 273 mm of ground clearance. If you're planning to tow anything out to Hatta Dam, a jet ski or a small trailer, the braked towing rating sits at roughly 3,500 kg, which covers most weekend gear. None of that hardware is new for 2025. It's the same formula Nissan has used in the Patrol for years, paired now with an engine that doesn't drink or lag the way the old one did.

Eight seats, and the boot you give up for them

Depending on how the middle row is configured, the Patrol seats seven or eight, and the difference actually matters if you're travelling as a group. Captain's chairs in the middle give you seven with an aisle through to the back row. A bench seat gets you eight, though nobody's climbing over a console to reach it. Either way, the third row is built for grown adults on the drive out to the desert, not just children folded in for a short hop, and that's the detail that separates this from most three-row crossovers.

The luggage question is the honest catch. With all three rows up, the boot behind the last seat holds a cool box and a few soft bags, enough for a day trip but not much more. Fold the third row down and the load bay opens up properly, wide enough for a week's worth of cases or the sand boards and recovery gear a proper desert run calls for. Try to run with all eight seats full and a full boot at the same time and you'll be choosing between people and kit. Most groups heading out for a day never hit that wall, because a day trip rarely fills both.

What a day in the sand costs in fuel and air conditioning

Nissan quotes 9.9 L/100km combined for the twin-turbo V6, and around town that number holds up reasonably well. Point the Patrol toward the desert for a day, though, and low-range crawling through soft sand plus the AC working overtime will push real consumption well past that, closer to 14 or 15 L/100km once you're off the tarmac. The 97-litre tank is what makes that manageable. It gives you enough range to get out to Hatta or Al Qudra and back without hunting for a station on the way, though it's worth starting the day with a full tank rather than assuming you'll find fuel out there.

Heat is the part every renter asks about, and it deserves a straight answer. Parked in an open lot through a Dubai afternoon, the cabin gets properly hot in the first few minutes after you climb back in, the same as any car here. What sets a Patrol-sized SUV apart is how it recovers once you're moving. The system is sized for the volume of air it has to cool, vents run strong to all three rows, and the back seats aren't left waiting on whatever drifts from the front. On the drive back from a long day in the sand, that matters more than the 0-100 figure ever will. Who should book the 2025 Patrol, and who should size down

Book it if the redesign is actually the point: a genuine desert or Hatta trip, a group that needs seven or eight real seats, or towing gear that a smaller SUV can't handle. The new V6 makes it a noticeably better car to live with than the V8 version ever was, quicker, quieter and easier on fuel, without giving up any of the low-range hardware that gets you through sand.

Size down if your week is mostly city errands and the odd airport run for one or two people. A five-metre SUV is a lot of truck to park in a Marina tower for a job a mid-size SUV handles for less money and far less fuss in a tight bay. You'll need to be 21 to take the keys, younger than plenty of desks ask for on something this size.
