Seven adults, a week of luggage and a run from DXB out to a desert resort: that's the trip the Chevrolet Tahoe 2023 handles without anyone riding with a bag on their lap. We rent it in Dubai with doorstep delivery and a no-deposit option, so you don't tie up a card hold on a vehicle this size. The real question this page settles is whether you need the Tahoe or one of its bigger siblings. It gives you full-size, three-row space and a 5.3-litre V8 without the extra length of a Suburban, which is the difference between fitting a multi-storey bay and circling for one.
This is a full-size SUV, not a crossover pretending to be one. Three rows, seven seats, and a body built to move people and their stuff over long distances in comfort. Families travelling heavy, corporate airport pickups, a wedding party that needs to stay together, weekend convoys to Hatta: that's the Tahoe's natural work.
Where it earns its keep over a large sedan is the third row plus the boot behind it, so you rarely choose between passengers and luggage. Where it earns its keep over the Suburban is parking and turning. The Suburban is a good 380mm longer again, and in a Marina tower car park or a tight U-turn, that length is felt every time.
Seven seats, and all three rows are usable by adults rather than the token third row you get in smaller SUVs. The middle row slides and the third row is full-height, so a six-footer in the back isn't folded up for the journey.
Luggage is where the Tahoe separates itself. Behind the third row you have about 722 litres, enough for a genuine group's cases rather than one suitcase and a prayer. That's roughly four to five large checked bags upright, plus soft bags wedged around them. Drop the third row and the load floor opens up to well over 2,000 litres for the airport-furniture run or a desert camping kit. If your group is four or fewer and travelling light, you're paying for space you won't use; size down. For five-plus with full luggage, this is the point where smaller SUVs start leaving bags behind.

A 5.3-litre V8 moving more than two and a half tonnes is thirsty, and there's no point pretending otherwise. Expect around 13.8 litres per 100km if you're sensible, and noticeably worse in stop-and-go Sheikh Zayed Road traffic with the AC fighting 45-degree heat. The 91-litre tank gives you a comfortable range, roughly 650km on a relaxed mix, so a week of normal Dubai use means filling up once or maybe twice rather than every other day. Fuel here is cheap by global standards, which softens the blow, but if low running cost is your priority, the Tahoe isn't the car and you know it already.
A cabin this large is the test of any AC system in a Dubai summer, and the Tahoe's tri-zone climate control is built for it. After a car has sat in the sun and the interior is into the 60s, the front vents pull the temperature down fast, and there are dedicated vents and a separate control for the second and third rows. That last point matters: in a lot of big SUVs the back row bakes while the driver is comfortable. Here everyone gets cold air, so seven people aren't arguing about the temperature on a 30-minute airport run. Give it a few minutes with all rows on full before you load passengers, and a parked Tahoe is genuinely comfortable by the time you pull away.
On the open road the Tahoe is in its element. The V8 has easy torque for overtaking on the E11, it cruises quietly at speed, and AWD plus 203mm of clearance handle sandy resort approaches and the odd graded track without drama. This isn't a dune basher, but it'll reach most desert camps and Hatta lookouts comfortably.
City life asks more of you. At over five metres long and more than two metres wide, the Tahoe needs deliberate parking. Standard mall and tower bays fit it, but only just, and the tighter multi-storey ramps in older Marina buildings reward patience and the reversing camera. Speed bumps and mall ramps are a non-issue with this much clearance.
Two practical notes. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are billed to you, so plan your gates. Seat belts are required in every row and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours.
Rent the Tahoe if you're moving five or more people with real luggage, doing airport runs for a group, or want one vehicle that handles both Sheikh Zayed Road cruising and a weekend out of the city. It's the sweet spot in the full-size class: nearly all the space of a Suburban, easier to park and turn. If your group is four or fewer, or you mostly drive solo in the city and care about fuel, this is more SUV than you need, and a mid-size crossover will cost you less to run. But for a full group that needs to travel together in comfort, the Tahoe is the one I'd hand over.
