Some 4x4s in this class are now soft, screen-heavy machines that happen to have a low-range lever buried in a menu. The 4.8-litre Patrol is the opposite, and that is exactly why people ask for it by name. We rent the Nissan Patrol 2025 in its Super Safari form across Dubai with 250 km a day included, brought to your door in one to two hours, and it is the analog one: a 4.8-litre TB48 inline-six, a real transfer case, body-on-frame, and almost none of the modern fuss. This page is for the renter who wants a tough, simple, do-it-forever 4x4 for desert weekends and big-family weeks, and who would rather have mechanical honesty than another touchscreen.
The heart of this car is a 4,759 cc naturally aspirated inline-six making around 280 hp. No turbos, no downsizing, no clever electronics deciding things for you. It pairs with a five-speed automatic and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a proper low-range gear, the kind you engage and trust on sand rather than read about in a settings screen.
On the road the 4.8 is unhurried and torquey low down. It pulls a five-metre body off the line with ease and cruises Sheikh Zayed Road without strain, though it is no overtaking weapon and the engine note climbs past 120. That suits the car. It was built to keep going in the desert for decades, not to chase lap times.
| Spec | Nissan Patrol 2025 (4.8 Super Safari) |
|---|---|
| Engine | 4.8L TB48 inline-six petrol (4,759 cc) |
| Power | About 280 hp |
| Transmission | 5-speed automatic |
| Drive | Part-time 4WD with low range |
| Seats | 7 (three rows) |
| Fuel tank | 95 litres (main) |
| Length x Width x Height | 5,080 x 1,940 x 1,855 mm |
| Ground clearance | About 235 mm |
A 4.8-litre petrol six is thirsty, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. In Dubai stop-and-go traffic and on the school run, expect figures in the high teens to around 20 litres per 100 km, and more when you are working it on dunes. The 95-litre tank softens the blow on range, but you will stop for fuel more often than you would in a modern downsized SUV. Petrol is cheap here, so the running cost stays manageable, but go in knowing the 4.8 trades economy for simplicity and grunt. If a week of city errands is your whole plan, a smaller SUV will cost you far less to keep fed.
Three rows, seven seats, and a tall, square cabin make this a genuine big-family vehicle. Two adults up front, kids in the middle, and the third row up still leaves a usable boot for a weekend's worth of soft bags. Fold the third row and you have a deep, flat load bay that swallows a full grocery run, a couple of large cases for a DXB or DWC airport run, plus a cooler box for the desert. With all seven seats occupied, luggage space shrinks to hand-bags and a few soft holdalls, so plan for that on airport collections with a full house.
The cabin itself is old-school. Hard-wearing plastics, simple controls, physical buttons you can find without looking. If you want stitched leather and ambient lighting, this is not that car, and that is the point.
Dubai summers sit in the mid-40s, and a cabin this large takes a moment to come down after it has baked in a car park. The Patrol's air conditioning is strong and built for the climate, with vents feeding the second and third rows so the kids in the back are not left to suffer. Give it a couple of minutes with the fans up after a long park in the sun and it cools the whole cabin properly. Park in shade where you can, because there is a lot of glass and metal to chill on the worst afternoons.
This is the part the 4.8 was made for. With about 235 mm of ground clearance, low-range gearing, and a torquey engine that does not panic when revs drop in soft sand, the Super Safari is a serious desert tool. Drop the tyre pressures, select low range, and it climbs and crosses dunes with the kind of mechanical confidence that experienced desert drivers trust precisely because the system is simple. The clearance also shrugs off rough Hatta tracks, mall ramps, and the speed bumps that catch lower cars out.
A word of honesty on the road: the ride is firm and a little trucky compared with the newer Patrol, and the steering is light and old-fashioned. On a desert weekend you will love it. On a daily commute you will notice it.
There is no hiding the size. At over five metres long and close to two wide, the Patrol is a handful in Marina side streets and tight multi-storey bays, and some older car parks have height limits worth checking first. Reversing cameras and sensors help, but you still need to think ahead at U-turns and ramps. If most of your week is mall basements and narrow residential parking, that is a real daily tax to weigh against the weekend payoff.
Salik tolls run on the renter's account, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, so drive to the limits. Seat belts are mandatory in every row, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which is easy to fit given the space back there.
Rent the 4.8 Patrol if you want the rugged, analog 4x4: desert regulars, dune crews, big families who value space and toughness over screens, and anyone who likes a vehicle they can read and trust. It is brought to your door in one to two hours, takes debit cards, cash, and Apple Pay, and rents from 18 where much of the market wants 21.
Pick the newer twin-turbo Patrol instead if you want a quiet, refined highway cruiser with the modern cabin and tech. And if your week is purely city driving with no sand in the plan, size down to a smaller SUV and save heavily on fuel and parking stress. But for a proper desert weekend with the family aboard, the old 4.8 is the one we would put our own keys on.
