Load paddleboards on a Friday morning, point toward Hatta Dam, then leave the tarmac where the wadi trail climbs into the Hajar foothills and drop the transfer case into low range. That's the trip that actually tests a Nissan Patrol 2025, not a glossy brochure line about capability. What's under the bonnet, and how it drives

Clear up the engine confusion first. If you see a listing for this car quoting 4.8 litres and 280 hp, that's the outgoing Super Safari, a much older vehicle Nissan still sells alongside the redesigned Patrol. The 2025 car is the all-new generation, and it runs a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 making 425 hp and 700 Nm through a nine-speed automatic. It gets this two-and-a-half-tonne SUV to 100 km/h in about 6.7 seconds, and the shove arrives early because the turbos are already spinning by the time you ask for the power.

None of that matters on the trail back down from Hatta, though. What matters there is the part underneath: a body-on-frame chassis, four-wheel drive with a genuine low-range transfer case, and terrain modes for sand, rock, mud and snow. Shift into rock mode on a loose, stepped section of the wadi track and the throttle softens while the traction control lets each wheel work on its own, so the Patrol picks its way over boulders instead of spinning a tyre and digging in. That's a different skill from dune driving, and it's the one this SUV is actually built for on a Hatta weekend. Ground clearance of 273 mm keeps the underside clear of rocks that would catch a lower crossover. Treat the terrain seriously either way. Check the route before you leave, go with at least one other vehicle, and carry basic recovery gear if you're heading off the marked trail.

Room for seven, and what fits in the boot

Back in the city, the Patrol asks something different of you. Depending on the middle-row layout it seats seven or eight, and the third row is built for adults on an actual journey, not a bench that only works for kids on a short hop. That's useful on the way out to Hatta with friends, and just as useful ferrying a full family to the airport.

The boot is the honest catch. With all three rows up, the space behind the last seat holds a cool box and a few soft bags, not a stack of hard cases for a full group. Fold the third row flat and the load bay opens up properly, enough for sand boards, recovery gear and a week's luggage together. Try to run with every seat full and every case packed at the same time and something gives, usually a row folds down. Most trips never hit that wall, because a day out with friends rarely also means a full house of luggage.

Parking is where the size bites. At 5,205 mm long and 2,030 mm wide, the Patrol wants a proper bay, and older multi-storey towers around the Marina or Downtown ask for patience, the reversing camera and a slow hand on the tight ramps. Once you're used to the rhythm it stops being stressful, and sitting this high means you see over the traffic around you rather than guessing what's ahead.

Fuel, Salik and keeping the cabin livable

Nissan quotes 9.9 L/100km combined for the twin-turbo V6, a figure that holds up reasonably on the open highway. A week of Dubai stop-start traffic with the air conditioning working hard pushes real consumption higher, and a day spent in low range on a rock trail pushes it higher still. The 97-litre tank absorbs most of that, so you're not hunting for a station on the way back from Hatta, though it's worth leaving with a full tank rather than assuming you'll find fuel out there.

Heat is the question every renter asks, and a cabin this size needs a system sized for the volume it has to cool. Leave the Patrol in an open car park through a Dubai afternoon and the first minute back inside is properly hot, same as anything here, but the system pulls the temperature down fast once you're moving. Vents run strong front and rear, so the third row gets real cold air rather than whatever drifts back from the front seats, which matters on the drive home after a long day outdoors.

A few practical notes for a trip that leaves the city. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to cover. The included allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, and a Hatta round trip with some trail driving added on is worth totting up before you leave rather than after. When this Patrol is worth booking, and when it isn't

Look elsewhere if it's one or two of you running errands around town with no plan to leave the tarmac. A five-metre SUV is a lot of truck to park for a job a mid-size SUV or a sedan does for less money and far less fuss in a tight bay, and you'll be feeding a 97-litre tank for trips that never need it.
