Most rental desks in Dubai keep a Nissan Patrol locked behind a 25th birthday. Ours doesn't. The new V6, and what it feels like to drive

Clear up the numbers first. Any listing for this car quoting 4.8 litres and 280 hp is describing the old Super Safari, a different vehicle that Nissan kept selling long after most markets moved on. The 2025 Patrol is the all-new Y63 generation, and it runs a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 making 425 hp and 700 Nm, sent through a nine-speed automatic. That torque arrives low, from 3,600 rpm, so the truck doesn't need revs to feel strong. Pull onto Sheikh Zayed Road and a gap in traffic closes with a light push of the pedal rather than a downshift and a wait, and 100 km/h comes up in about 6.7 seconds, which is properly quick for something this heavy.

The old V8 had a rumble people liked. This engine trades that character for calm, quieter at idle, quieter at a cruise, and less tiring over a long drive. Underneath, it stays a genuine body-on-frame 4x4 with a low-range transfer case and terrain modes for sand, rock, mud and snow, so none of that composure came from softening the hardware. Most renters use the four-wheel-drive system for confidence on a rough car park or a sandy verge rather than a full dune run, and that's a sensible way to use it.

Seats, the boot and living with it day to day

Depending on how the middle row is set up, captain's chairs or a bench, the Patrol seats seven or eight. The real difference from most three-row SUVs is the last row itself. It takes a grown adult on an actual trip, not just a child folded in for twenty minutes, and the middle row tips and slides out of the way so getting back there doesn't take a climb.

Luggage is the honest part. With every seat up, the space behind the third row is enough for a few soft bags or the weekly shop, not a stack of hard suitcases for a full car. Fold that row flat and the boot opens up properly, wide enough for a family's cases on a week away. Running with every seat filled and every case in tow at once is the one combination that doesn't quite work, though most trips never actually ask for both together.

The footprint is the trade-off for all that room. At 5,205 mm long and 2,030 mm wide, the Patrol wants a proper bay, and a tight multi-storey tower or a Marina ramp asks for the cameras and a slower hand than a smaller SUV needs. Ground clearance of 273 mm works entirely in your favour here. Speed bumps, steep mall entrances and rough patches of road that catch a low sedan simply don't register.

Fuel at the pump, and the cabin once you're moving

Nissan quotes 9.9 L/100km combined for the twin-turbo V6, and that figure holds up on the open highway. A week of Dubai's stop-start traffic with the air conditioning working hard pushes real consumption higher, so plan for a bit more than the official number rather than less. The 97-litre tank absorbs most of that difference, giving you a proper range between fills even if each fill costs more than it would in a smaller car.

Heat is the question every renter asks, and a cabin this size needs a system built for the space it has to cool. Climb back in after a few hours in an open July car park and the first minute is genuinely hot, same as in anything left out here, but the recovery is fast once the AC gets moving. Vents run strong front and rear, so third-row passengers get real cold air rather than whatever drifts back once the front seats are comfortable, which matters on a school run or an airport pickup with the whole family aboard.

A few practical numbers to keep in front of you before you book. The included allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre after that, worth a quick tally if your week includes a long day trip rather than city driving. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's to cover. And the minimum age on this Patrol is 21, a genuine outlier for a full-size SUV in this city.

Book it for the access, not just the badge

Rent the 2025 Patrol if you need what the size and the new engine actually deliver: a big family or group with real luggage, a third row that seats adults rather than just kids, or simply a calmer, quicker drive than the old V8 gave you on the highway. Being able to book it from 21 also puts it within reach of younger drivers most Dubai desks would turn away outright, so if you're in your early twenties and have been told no elsewhere, ask here first.

Look elsewhere if it's one or two of you running errands and the odd airport drop. You'll spend the week placing a five-metre SUV into bays built for something smaller and feeding a 97-litre tank for a job a mid-size SUV or a sedan handles for less money and far less fuss in a tight bay. Rent the Patrol for the space, the capability and the access age 21 gives you, not because it's the biggest thing on the lot.
