The Nissan Patrol 2022 is the version every long-serving rental desk in Dubai already knows cold, not a new model still working out its kinks. What makes it worth a look next to its own newer sibling is straightforward: a minimum age of just 21, five years lower than most big SUVs in this class ask for, and a car whose strengths and quirks are already well documented rather than still being discovered. This page settles whether that familiarity beats the newer Patrol, or whether you actually need the redesign.

The V8, and what it's known for

Open the bonnet and you get a 5.6-litre petrol V8 making 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, paired with a seven-speed automatic and a genuine four-wheel-drive system with low range. This is body-on-frame construction, the same basic recipe Nissan used on the Patrol through most of this generation's run, and it's a formula the desk has watched hold up through years of Dubai heat, sand and stop-start traffic. In a straight line it's properly quick for something this size, 0-100 km/h in around 6.6 seconds, and the V8's reputation in this market is for pulling hard and staying smooth doing it, not for needing to be worked.

One thing to confirm before you book. Some 2022 Patrols in the GCC carry a 4.0-litre V6 instead of the V8, a fine engine on its own but a quieter, less muscular one with none of the pull described here. Seats, boot and the honest cargo trade-off

The Patrol seats seven, sometimes eight depending on whether the middle row is a bench or captain's chairs, and the third row is built for adults on a real trip rather than kids folded in for a photo. The middle row slides and tips out of the way, so getting back there doesn't take a production.

Cargo is the honest trade-off, worth saying plainly rather than dressing it up. With all seats up, the boot behind the third row holds a few soft bags and a pushchair, not a wall of hard suitcases. Fold one side of the third row down and you get a proper load bay for cases while five or six people still travel. Drop the whole row and it takes a big family's luggage for a week without complaint. The one day this catches people out is when you need every seat filled and every case packed at once. Plan for that day specifically if it's on your itinerary, because most weeks never actually ask for both.

Fuel, heat and running a full-size 4x4

A V8 this size was never built to sip fuel, and the combined figure of around 14 L/100km undersells what it actually costs in Dubai traffic. With the AC working hard and a heavy right foot, real consumption tends to land closer to 16 or 17. The 140-litre tank is what makes that bearable, since it buys several days between fills even on a thirsty week.

Mileage is the number to plan around before you leave. The included allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, which covers city errands, school runs and airport pickups with room to spare, though a full day out to Hatta and back is worth totting up first. You'll need to be 21 to take the keys, younger than most cars in this class allow. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter, same as on every car we hand over.

Heat is the question every renter asks, and a cabin this size needs a proper system to handle it. After a few hours parked in July sun, the Patrol takes real effort to bring back down, but the vents are strong enough to do it quickly once you climb back in, and rear vents mean the third row isn't living on whatever cold air drifts back from the front.

Size shows up mostly when you park. At just over 5.1 metres long and close to two metres wide, the Patrol wants a proper bay rather than the gap near the trolley return, and the reverse camera earns its keep in a tight multi-storey. The 275 mm of ground clearance more than makes up for it elsewhere, flattening speed bumps and steep ramps you'd otherwise slow to a crawl for, and with genuine low range on tap, the dunes past Hatta are a realistic weekend rather than a brochure line. Drop your tyre pressures, carry recovery gear and go out with someone who knows the route if you're heading off tarmac. Plenty of the Patrols we rent never leave it, and that's a perfectly good way to use one too.

Who should rent it, and who should size down

Book this Patrol if you want a large, dependable SUV whose behaviour is already known, a big family or group with real luggage, or a week that mixes highway driving, seven seats and a genuine desert run. The V8 and the low-range gearing aren't for show, and a minimum age of 21 makes it reachable for renters some other big SUVs turn away.

Size down if it's one or two of you running errands and doing the odd airport pickup. You'll spend the week parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a big V8 for a job a mid-size crossover handles for less. The newer 2025 Patrol is worth a look too, if a more efficient engine matters more to you than a car whose behaviour every desk in this city can already predict.
