Turn 21 in Dubai and most of the full-size SUV fleet is still four years out of reach, whatever your licence looks like. The Nissan Patrol 2021 is one of the few exceptions. The V8, and how it drives

Under the bonnet sits a 5.6-litre petrol V8 making 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, paired with a seven-speed automatic driving all four wheels through a genuine low-range transfer case. This is body-on-frame hardware built for weight and distance, not a crossover platform wearing rugged badges. On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into 120 km/h without any strain in the engine note, and there's so much torque in reserve that overtaking a slow truck needs a light push of the pedal rather than a downshift and a wait. For something over five metres nose to tail, 0-100 km/h in around 6.6 seconds still surprises people at the lights.

One thing worth confirming before you book. A share of 2021 Patrols in the GCC carry a smaller 4.0-litre V6 instead of the V8. It still gets the job done, just with noticeably less shove, so if the V8 is the reason you picked this car, ask us to check which engine your specific unit has.

Seven seats and what the boot actually takes

Seven seats, and the Patrol treats the number honestly. The second row is wide enough for three across, or two adults who don't need to negotiate elbow room, and it slides and tips forward on its own, so getting to the third row isn't something you climb over anything for. Once you're back there, the seat is sized for an adult on a real drive, not a child folded in for a short hop.

Luggage is where a group needs to think ahead. With all seven seats up, the space behind the last row takes a couple of soft bags and not much else, which is fine for a night out or a beach run but tight for a week's worth of hard suitcases. Fold one side of the third row flat and you get a genuine load bay for cases while five or six people still travel. Take the whole row out and it swallows a week's luggage for a large group with room spare. For a younger group of friends splitting a week rather than a family with a full set of kids' gear, that middle setting, one side down, is usually the sweet spot. The day this catches anyone out is the rare one where every seat is filled and every case is packed at once, and on most bookings that day doesn't come up.

A black cabin, fuel and running cost

Black works against you here in a way white or silver never would. A dark body absorbs more heat than it reflects, so panels and the roof run noticeably hotter after a few hours parked under the July sun, and the cabin starts from a worse position before you even climb back in. Give the front vents a couple of minutes on full and the temperature drops fast regardless, and because the rear vents are properly fed, the second and third rows aren't left breathing whatever warm air the front seats already used. It's a real difference from a white Patrol, just not one that changes how liveable the car is once the AC has had its moment.

Fuel is the other honest number. A 5.6-litre V8 in a two-and-a-half-tonne SUV was never built to sip, and the combined figure of around 14 L/100km undersells what you'll actually see. Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working hard tends to push real consumption toward 16 or 17 litres per 100 km. The 140-litre tank absorbs most of that, buying several days of normal driving between stops even with a heavy right foot.

Mileage is the figure worth planning around. The daily allowance is 250 km, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, which covers city errands, mall runs and airport pickups with room to spare, though a full day out to Hatta or Abu Dhabi and back is worth a quick tally before you leave. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter, the same as on any car we hand over.

The renter this age-21 Patrol suits, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Nissan Patrol 2021 if you're a young group splitting a week and want the seats, the boot and the highway manners without waiting until 25 to book them, or if you're a larger family covering real distance with real luggage. The lower age limit only pays off when the trip actually uses what the car offers: seven seats, a V8 that shrugs off long drives, and enough ground clearance to handle a mall ramp or a Hatta track without slowing down for it.

Look elsewhere if it's one or two of you running errands with the odd airport pickup. You'd be parking a five-metre SUV built for seven and feeding a thirsty V8 for a job a mid-size crossover or a sedan handles for less money and less effort at the wheel. Being able to book it at 21 is a genuine advantage in this class. It's only worth using if the week ahead actually needs the size that comes with it.
