Ask around Dubai's rental desks for a full-size V8 SUV and 25 is the age most quote before they hand over the keys. This grey Nissan Patrol 2021 is one of the exceptions on our fleet: it rents from 21, with the same doorstep delivery in one to two hours as every other car we run. Nothing about the car is toned down for the lower age limit. It is the same Y62-generation 5.6-litre V8, seven seats and genuine 4x4 hardware you would get on a Patrol row that asks for 25, just finished in grey instead of the white or black most of the lot wears. The V8, and what it takes to drive a car this size at 21

This is the Y62-generation Patrol, the facelifted body-on-frame wagon Nissan has built across the GCC since 2020, not the redesigned model that arrived later, and not the older 4.8-litre Super Safari wagon some listings confuse it with. Most 2021 Patrols in this fleet carry a 5.6-litre petrol V8 making 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm at 4,000 rpm, sent through a seven-speed automatic to all four wheels with a proper low-range transfer case rather than a soft crossover system dressed up to sound tougher than it is.

None of that power asks much of the driver in a straight line. The V8 pulls cleanly from low revs and settles into 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road without any strain, so overtaking a slow truck takes a light push of the pedal, not a downshift and a wait. The real skill this car demands has nothing to do with the engine. It is placing over five metres of nose-to-tail, close to two metres of width, into a lane or a parking bay by feel, and a lower age limit does not shrink any of that. Use the reversing camera, take the first few bays slowly, and the size stops feeling foreign within a day.

One thing worth confirming before you book. A share of 2021 Patrols in the GCC carry a smaller 4.0-litre V6 instead of the V8. It gets the job done, just with noticeably less shove, so if the V8 is the reason you picked this car, ask us to check which engine your specific unit has.

Seven seats and a boot that asks you to plan ahead

Seven seats here means seven usable seats, not seven counted on a spec sheet. The middle row is wide enough for three across, or two adults who never touch elbows, and it slides and tips forward under its own weight, so nobody climbs over folded seatbacks to reach the back row. An adult can spend a real drive back there rather than just riding along for a few minutes. Some units carry a middle-row bench instead of captain's chairs, which turns seven into eight, so ask when you book if the count matters to your group.

Cargo space is where the third row bites back a little, and it is worth being upfront about it. Every seat up, the area behind the last row fits a handful of soft bags and a supermarket run, not seven people's hard luggage for a week away. Fold down one side of the back row and a real load bay opens up while the car still carries five or six. Lay the whole row flat and it takes a large group's cases with space left over. The awkward scenario is needing all seven seats occupied and every case loaded at once, and across ordinary bookings, errands, a school run, one trip to the airport, that scenario rarely shows up.

Fuel, Salik and keeping a grey cabin cool in summer

A naturally aspirated V8 hauling two and a half tonnes was never going to be cheap to feed, and the quoted 14 L/100km is closer to a best case than a Dubai average. Sit in stop-start traffic with the AC working through a full afternoon and consumption climbs toward 16 or 17 litres per 100 km. The 140-litre tank covers for that, stretching several days of normal driving between fill-ups even on a thirsty week.

Distance is the figure worth actually tracking. This Patrol comes with 250 km included per day, and every kilometre after that adds AED 0.5. School runs, errands and airport transfers stay well within that, though a proper day trip out to Hatta deserves a rough calculation before you set off. As with every car we rent, Salik charges and any RTA fines fall on the renter, and every seat needs a belt, with a proper child seat required for passengers under four.

Grey occupies the middle ground on heat. It picks up more warmth off a July sun than a white body does, yet stays noticeably cooler to the touch than black paint would after the same few hours outside. Cabin temperature comes down to the glass more than the paint, so plan on a couple of minutes with the front vents wide open once you climb back in. The rear vents pull their own weight too, so the second and third rows are not stuck breathing whatever the front seats already used up.

The Patrol a 21-year-old can actually book

This Patrol makes sense for a younger group or a family who wants a full-size, seven-seat V8 without the usual wait until 25, provided the trip actually calls for that much car. Cousins splitting a villa, a group flying in together with real cases, or anyone planning a day toward Hatta on top of the city driving gets genuine value from the seats, the boot and the ground clearance here. The lower age limit is the door-opener, but the car earns its keep on what it does once you're inside it.

It makes far less sense for one or two people running errands and the occasional airport drop. A car this size wants a full parking bay every time, and a V8 this thirsty costs more to run than the trip needs when a smaller SUV would do the same job for less. Turning 21 gets you past a barrier most full-size rentals put up, but that barrier being gone is not itself a reason to book. Book it because your week needs seven seats and this much reach, not because the age limit finally lines up.
