Most cars on a Dubai rental lot want you to be 25 before they will hand you the keys. The Nissan Micra 2020 asks for 21, and that gap is real money and real freedom if you are a younger resident, a visitor without a decade of driving history, or someone who would rather not hunt across town for the one agency that takes you. It also happens to be the smallest car we run, a five-seat automatic hatchback built for short trips around town rather than long ones across the country. We can have it at your door within one to two hours of booking, in white, and take cash or a debit card on delivery. The real question is not whether the Micra is a good car. It is whether a compact this size, with this engine, fits the week you actually have planned.

The Micra carries a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, good for around 100 hp and 135 Nm, paired with a 4-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels. That gearbox has one fewer trick than the CVTs in some newer economy cars, and it shows most from a dead stop, where 100 km/h takes closer to 14 seconds than 10. None of that registers at the speed city driving actually happens. Pulling away at a green light or nosing out of a supermarket exit, there is enough power on tap, and the automatic does not hunt for gears the way older boxes sometimes do. Ask it to climb a steep car park ramp with the AC working hard and it takes its time rather than surging, which is a fair trade for a car built to be small and cheap to run rather than quick.
The boot holds 265 litres, honest small-hatchback territory rather than anything generous. One large suitcase and a soft bag fit with the rear seats up. A second hard case pushes past what the boot can take, so travellers landing with a full week of luggage should plan to fold a seat down or pack lighter. Up front, two adults have real room to stretch out. In the back, two adults manage a short crossing of the city without complaint, though the middle seat suits a child better than an adult on any trip longer than a few minutes.
Size is the other half of the story. At 3.78 metres long with a 4.7-metre turning radius, the Micra spins through a U-turn in one movement where a mid-size sedan needs several, and it slots into bays that drivers of bigger cars pass over. Ground clearance sits low, as it does on most cars this size, so treat sharp speed bumps and steep basement ramps with a bit of care rather than speed.
Nissan quotes 15.4 km per litre combined, a lab figure you will not match with the AC running flat out through an August afternoon. Real Dubai driving, a mix of stop-start traffic and short errands, should still land around 11 to 12 km/l for most ordinary weeks, and that is our own estimate rather than a published number. The 41-litre tank means fewer stops at the pump over a week of city use. Two costs sit outside the fuel bill and land on you as the renter rather than us: Salik at every toll gate, and any RTA fine picked up during the rental. Seat belts are mandatory for everyone in the car, and a child seat is required for anyone under four.
A Micra parked in the open sun through a summer afternoon gets exactly as hot as any other closed car, and its small cabin actually works in your favour once you climb back in. Less air to shift means the front vents pull the temperature down faster than they would in a bigger hatchback. Controls are simple dials, not a touchscreen climate menu, and rear passengers should not expect much help from the back of the cabin on the hottest days. Give the front vents a minute pointed at yourself and the car is comfortable again.
Book the Micra if you are one or two people handling the daily commute, errands or short hops across the city, and keeping both the rental and the fuel bill low matters more than outright speed. It is also the practical pick if you are 21, 22 or 23 and tired of every other rental car on the market asking for 25. Nothing else on the fleet is easier to park in a tight multi-storey or turn around on a narrow residential street.
Size up if you are four adults travelling with a week of luggage, since the back seat and 265-litre boot will feel small within a day. Size up too if your plans involve real highway distance, an Abu Dhabi run or repeated overtaking on Sheikh Zayed Road, where the modest power and older 4-speed automatic mean planning your moves ahead rather than just flooring it. For everyone else, city errands, a light case or two, and a week spent keeping costs down, this is one of the easiest cars on the lot to hand over. The daily allowance is 250 km, extra kilometres cost AED 0.5 each, and the minimum age to rent is 21.
