Parking and city manoeuvring

This is where the Micra makes its case. At just under four metres long it tucks into bays that leave bigger hatches circling, and the light steering plus a tight turning circle make underground car parks and Marina side streets a non-event. U-turns and multi-storey ramps take no planning. The 150 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and the lips at mall entrances without scraping, so you're not crawling over every hump like you would in something lower.

Two up front sit comfortably. The back takes two adults for a short hop or two kids for the week. Three across the rear is a squeeze, and that's the honest ceiling on this cabin.

How often you'll stop for fuel

The Micra's other selling point is running cost. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol sips around 4.5 litres per 100 km on a combined cycle, and even with Dubai's AC load and stop-start traffic pushing the real figure higher, a week of errands costs very little to fuel. The 41-litre tank stretches well past 700 km in mixed driving, so a typical city week needs one fill, maybe two if you're commuting a long way each day.

For school runs, supermarket trips, and the odd dash across town, that's the number that matters more than any other on the spec sheet.

Drop the rear seats and you free up real room for a flat-pack run or a couple of bikes, but only when nobody's sitting back there. A family of four flying in with a case each will fill it before the last bag's in, and that's your cue to size up.

Heat, AC and the open road

A small cabin is easy work for the air-con once it's running. Park it under the July sun and the first minute is hot like any car here, but the compact interior pulls down through the front vents faster than a big SUV does. There are no rear air vents, so with passengers in the back, set the fans early and let the cold air circulate before they climb in.

On Sheikh Zayed Road the Micra cruises happily at the limit and overtakes fine when you give it a moment to gather pace. Hold it above 120 for a long stretch and you'll hear the small engine working, with more wind and road noise than a bigger car carries. It's stable and safe, just not effortless at the top end. Short DXB or DWC airport hops suit it well; a daily Abu Dhabi commute would have you wanting more in reserve.

One note on the rules: Salik tolls run through the car's tag and pass to you, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours to settle. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Book the Micra 2020 if you're driving solo or as a couple, your trips are mostly city and suburban, and easy parking with a low fuel bill matters more than space or highway punch.
