The engine, and how it drives

Under the bonnet sits the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder Mitsubishi puts in the Attrage sedan, tuned to around 77 hp and 100 Nm and sent to the front wheels through a CVT. Around town, at 60 to 80 km/h, it's smooth and unremarkable in the best way, which is exactly what a car for the daily commute and school run should be. Ask more of it, a fast overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road with four aboard, and the three-cylinder gets vocal while the CVT lets the revs climb before the car actually picks up pace. Solo or two-up it'll sit at 120 km/h without drama, but a full car and a heavy right foot both expose the modest output. Treat it as a city car that can also do the highway, not the other way round.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

At 235 litres the boot is genuinely small, the trade for a body this short. One large suitcase and a soft bag is a realistic fit with all five seats up. Ask for more and you're folding the rear row down, which opens things up to somewhere near 485 litres but costs you the back seat entirely. Up front, two adults have enough room. In the back, two manage a short hop across town, but knee room disappears on a longer drive, and a third across the bench only really works for kids. The upside of that small footprint shows the moment you're parking. At 3,845 mm nose to tail and 1,665 mm wide, the Mirage drops into a tight Marina tower bay or an older kerbside gap that a sedan needs two attempts to fit into. Ground clearance of 160 mm shrugs off mall ramps and speed bumps without a scrape, though this is a front-wheel-drive city hatch built for tarmac, so keep it off sand and soft shoulders.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

Mitsubishi quotes the Mirage at around 21 km/L, a best-case lab figure you won't see once the AC is fighting Dubai heat. In real city driving, expect closer to 14 to 15 km/L, still very good, and with a 35-litre tank that puts a realistic range around 480 to 500 km on a fill. The rental terms follow the same logic: 250 km a day is included, and anything past that is billed at AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a normal week of commuting and errands rarely tips you over. Salik tolls on your route and any RTA fine during the rental both pass to you as the renter, standard across the fleet rather than specific to this car.

Leave any hatchback in a July car park and it turns into an oven within minutes. Here the small cabin actually works in your favour, since there's less air to chill and the front vents pull the temperature down to bearable faster than in a bigger SUV. Set your expectations at this price point: single-zone manual air conditioning and no rear vents, which is normal for an economy hatchback. Back-seat passengers rely on air reaching them from the front, so a full car on a scorching afternoon asks a bit more of the system. Park in shade when you can, and the first minute back in the car is the only rough one.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Book the Mitsubishi Mirage 2023 if you're one or two people who want the lowest running cost on the fleet and don't need much boot. City errands, the commute, weekend mall runs, this car does all of it cheaply and parks itself into spaces most other rentals can't reach. Renters need to be 25 or over for this one, a stricter cutoff than some of the smaller cars we carry, so check that before you book if a younger driver is meant to be behind the wheel.

Size up if you're four adults with real luggage, or if your week runs mostly on the highway with fast overtakes on the agenda. The back seat and the boot both run out of room fast with a full car, and the engine needs planning rather than a stab of the pedal once it's carrying weight. The Attrage sedan buys you a much bigger boot on the same drivetrain, or step into a mid-size sedan if you want more push at highway speed too.
