The cheapest week you can drive

Money is the entire reason this car exists, so start there. Under the bonnet is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder making around 78 hp and 100 Nm, driving the front wheels through a CVT. Mitsubishi quotes close to 20 km per litre, a lab best-case you won't actually see. In real Dubai traffic, with the AC working against the heat, expect nearer 14 to 15 km/L. That's still excellent, and with a 42-litre tank a normal week of city running rarely needs more than one fill.

The rental terms sit alongside that. You get 250 km a day, which covers commuting, errands and the odd longer run, and past that it's AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. Two costs fall to you as the renter and neither is the car's fault: Salik each time your route crosses a toll gate, and any RTA fine during the rental.

Parking, and how much actually fits

This is a proper small hatchback, about 3,845 mm nose to tail and 1,665 mm wide, which makes it one of the easiest cars we rent to place in a tight spot. It drops into a cramped Marina tower bay or an old Karama kerbside gap where a sedan has to shuffle back and forth. The 160 mm of clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without a scrape. Keep it on tarmac, though. This is a front-wheel-drive city car, so no sand and no soft verges.

Be realistic about the boot. At 235 litres it's small, which is the price you pay for the short body. One large suitcase plus a soft bag is the honest limit with all five seats up. Fold the back down and it opens to roughly 487 litres, fine for a big grocery run or a flat-pack, but then you've given up the rear seat. For an airport pickup with two people and a week's luggage it's a squeeze, and that boot is the main reason the Attrage sedan twin exists. Inside, two adults up front are comfortable. In the back, two manage a short hop across town, but knee room runs out on a longer run, and three across is a kids-only arrangement.

Cooling a small cabin in July

Leave any car in a July car park and it turns into an oven within minutes. Here the small cabin actually helps. There isn't much air to chill, so the front vents pull a 48-degree interior down to bearable faster than any SUV manages. Set your expectations at the price: single-zone manual AC and no rear air vents, which is standard at this end of the market. Back-seat passengers rely on the airflow reaching them from the front, so a full car in peak summer asks a bit more of the system. Park in shade or a basement when you can, and the first minute back in the car is the only rough one.

Who should book it, and who should look bigger

Rent the Mitsubishi Mirage 2023 if you drive mostly solo or two-up and you want the cheapest, most economical automatic for a Dubai week or month. For the commute, city errands and the odd tight car park, nothing on the fleet costs less to keep fuelled or slots into a small bay more easily.

Look bigger in two cases. If you regularly carry passengers with their luggage, the small boot and tight back seat will wear on you, so the Attrage sedan or a mid-size like an Elantra gives everyone room. And if your week lives on Sheikh Zayed Road, be honest about the engine: it's happy up to 100, but a fast overtake with a full load has the three-cylinder buzzing and the CVT sending revs up before the pace follows.
