What goes in the back before anyone gets in

The boot holds 293 litres with the bench up. That figure reads worse than it lives, because the load floor is deep rather than wide, and it takes soft bags far better than it takes rigid ones. A folded pushchair and a beach bag go in side by side. An overnight bag each for three people goes in without anyone rearranging things twice.

Rigid luggage is where the number bites. One large hard case takes up most of the floor, and the second ends up on the back seat, which works until somebody needs that seat. Fold the bench down and you get real length, enough for a long box or a bicycle with the front wheel off, so the awkward one off jobs are still covered.

The fourth seat, and who ends up in it

Five belts, four usable places, three people who will be genuinely happy on a long run. The MG3 is 1,797 mm wide, which is broad for a supermini, and that width shows up as shoulder room rather than legroom. Two adults sit side by side in the back without touching. What they run short of is knee room once the driver's seat is set for anyone tall.

For a twenty minute hop across town, four adults is fine and nobody complains. For a run down to Abu Dhabi and back, the person behind the driver will have opinions by the time you arrive. Two children in the back instead, and none of this is a conversation at all. Child seats are required for under fours here and belts are mandatory in every seat, so put the seat on the booking rather than solving it at the kerb.

The rear bench is also where Dubai heat gets honest. There are no rear air vents in this car, so anyone in the back is cooled by whatever makes it through the gap between the front seats. The small cabin helps, since there is less air to chill than in a saloon. After a full afternoon in an uncovered bay you still need two or three minutes with the fan up and a window cracked before the vents blow properly cold, and the belt buckles stay too hot to touch for a while after that. Front vent output is strong once it catches up. A windscreen shade costs almost nothing and does more for your first five minutes than any setting on the dashboard.

Seven days of fuel, tolls and kilometres

The combined rating is 6.6 litres per 100 km against a 45 litre tank, so about 680 km on paper. Nobody reaches that here in summer. With the compressor working most of the time and traffic doing what it does, budget closer to eight litres per 100 km, which brings a tank down to roughly 550 km. A week of school runs, office trips and mall parking is one fill. Add a day trip out of the emirate and it becomes two.

Ground clearance is 132 mm, and low is the honest word for it. Steep basement ramps want a slow, square approach, and the harder community speed bumps deserve a lift off rather than momentum. Front wheel drive at that height also answers the question we get every winter: keep it on tarmac, because soft sand and the rougher tracks near Hatta are not this car's business.

On the highway it holds 120 without fuss and stays settled there. The limit shows when you ask for a fast lane change into a gap that is already closing, since 109 PS through a CVT gathers speed steadily rather than sharply and you have to commit earlier than you would in something turbocharged. The revs climb and sit high while it works, so a long stint at speed is louder in here than in a bigger car.

Who should take this one

Rent the MG3 if there are two or three of you living inside the city and most of your driving is short. Errands, the school run, the office, a weekend trip across town, the occasional airport pickup with sensible bags. On that brief it is one of the cheapest automatics worth having, and the delivery and no deposit terms mean you can have it outside your building this afternoon.

Skip it if four adults are travelling together regularly, or if your luggage is hard cases rather than holdalls. A sedan solves both problems for a small step up in daily cost and stops you doing luggage arithmetic every morning. Skip it too if your week is mostly motorway kilometres, because this car is tuned for city speeds and a daily intercity commute would wear thin. Match it to the week it suits, and very little at this end of the market does the job better.
