We rent the MG MG3 2024 in Dubai with a no-deposit option, and that matters more than it sounds when a held block on your card is the thing standing between you and a booking. How 109 PS through a CVT actually behaves

There's no turbo here, so nothing arrives in a rush and nothing catches you out. You press the pedal and the car responds in proportion, which is a quality people underrate until they've spent a fortnight in something jerky.

The CVT is the part worth understanding before you book. Instead of stepping through fixed gears it slides the ratio around to keep the engine where it makes its power, so between about 40 and 80 km/h there's no hunting, no downshift thump when a jam finally loosens, and no hesitation pulling into a gap. Crawling in traffic is where this gearbox is at its best, and Dubai gives it plenty of practice.

Above 100 the same gearbox tells a different story. Ask for a quick overtake and the ratio drops, the revs climb and then sit there while the car gathers speed steadily rather than urgently. It's not slow and it's not unsafe. It's just a car that would rather you planned the move than demanded it. The engine note through that stretch is the loudest thing in the cabin, more so than road or wind noise, and after twenty minutes of it you notice.

So the honest summary: this is a city car that tolerates the motorway. It'll hold 120 on the E11 all day. It simply doesn't reward being driven that way, and if your week is built around long fast legs between emirates you'll want something with more muscle.

Living with it Monday to Friday

The seating position is higher than the roofline suggests, and the glass is deep enough that you can see all four corners without guessing. That's the single biggest reason it feels easy in traffic, more than any spec on the table above.

Four adults will get in. The two in the back will want the front seats nudged forward, which is fine across town and less fine on anything longer. Two kids back there and the packaging stops being a topic at all. Under-fours need a child seat by law here, so tell us when you book and we'll have one fitted rather than sorting it at the kerb.

Ground clearance is 132 mm, low even for a hatchback. Community speed bumps are a non-issue at a sensible speed. Anything with a lip or a steep transition wants a slow, straight approach. Nothing on your itinerary should involve leaving tarmac, because front-wheel drive at this height rules out sand and the rougher tracks out towards Hatta.

On running costs, the combined rating of 6.6 L/100 km against a 45-litre tank gives you around 680 km, which is more than a normal week of city driving needs. Salik is the line people forget. What the air conditioning can and can't do

Once you're moving, the front vents are strong and the small cabin volume works in your favour. There's simply less air in here to chill than in a sedan or a seven-seater, so the temperature drops away quickly enough that you're comfortable before you've cleared the car park exit.

The catch is the back. There are no rear air vents in this car, so anyone behind you gets cooled by whatever spills through the gap between the front seats. On a school run in April nobody notices. In August, with two adults in the back and the outside air in the high forties, they will. Set the system to recirculate rather than pulling in hot outside air, aim the passenger-side vent between the front seats for the first few minutes, and it evens out.

One practical note that isn't in any brochure: the fan on full and the engine working hard at highway speed make the cabin loud enough that phone calls get awkward. Drop both a notch once the temperature's down and it's a much calmer place.

Who this car is right for

Book the MG3 if you're one or two people living inside the city and your week looks like a commute, a supermarket run, a mall trip and an airport pickup at the end of it. On that brief it's genuinely hard to beat, and everything about the way it drives is tuned for exactly those speeds.

Pick something else if you're four adults with full-size cases, or if you're doing serious highway distance more than once or twice. In the first case a compact sedan solves the boot and the back seat in one move. In the second, you want a turbocharged car and a conventional automatic so overtaking is a decision rather than a project.

Everyone else, this is the sensible, cheap, unfussy answer, and it's honest about being nothing more than that.
