The question we field most often before handing this car over has nothing to do with the engine. People want to know whether it will clear the ramp into their building and sit properly in the bay they have been assigned. It does, on both counts, and that answer explains a lot about who books it. Threading it through a Dubai car park

At 4,113 mm long and 1,797 mm wide, the MG3 belongs to the group of cars you stop thinking about the moment you enter a multi-storey. The older car parks around Deira and the towers built before the bays got generous are where the difference shows. You open the door fully instead of shuffling out sideways, and a bay with a pillar on one side is still a bay rather than a problem.

Reversing in is a single manoeuvre. Visibility over the short bonnet is good, the turning circle handles a mall U-turn without a three-point correction, and the light steering that feels a bit numb at speed is exactly what you want when you're inching between two parked SUVs.

Ground clearance is 132 mm, which is low even by hatchback standards. Community speed bumps are fine at a sensible pace. Where you notice it is a steeply angled driveway or the lip at the bottom of a basement ramp, especially with four people aboard and a loaded boot. Approach those straight and slowly and nothing happens. Take one at an angle in a hurry and you'll hear the nose.

The boot is 293 litres, which is a real hatchback boot and not a token one. One large suitcase plus a backpack goes in without effort, or a full weekly shop with room to spare. Two large cases means one of them rides on the back seat. Fold the rear bench and the shape of the space becomes genuinely useful, which is why this car does a lot of furniture-collection runs for people setting up an apartment.

Above 100, and what the E11 asks of it

The MG3 is comfortable at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road. It tracks straight, it doesn't wander, and the cabin is quieter at a steady cruise than the price suggests. That's the honest good news.

The caveat is what happens when you want to change speed rather than hold it. There are 109 PS here and a CVT, and the pairing is tuned for city driving. Ask for a sudden overtake at 120 and the revs climb and sit there while the car gathers itself, so you plan the move a few seconds earlier than you would in a turbocharged sedan. Do that and it's fine. Treat it as a car that responds instantly and you'll find yourself in gaps you'd rather not be in. At 1,502 mm tall and not very heavy, it also moves around a little in a strong crosswind on the exposed stretches out towards Abu Dhabi.

Fuel barely enters the conversation on a highway week. The combined rating is 6.6 litres per 100 km against a 45-litre tank, so about 680 km in theory. Summer city driving with the air conditioning working hard is closer to eight litres per 100 km, and that's the number to plan around. Salik is the cost people forget: you pay the tolls per gate, and a week of commuting on the E11 adds up faster than most visitors expect. Any RTA fine during the rental comes back to you as well.

What the air conditioning can and can't do in August

A small cabin is an advantage here. There's less air to cool than a seven-seater carries, so the MG3 recovers from a baked car park faster than most of what we rent. Faster is the operative word rather than fast. Leave it uncovered at noon in July and the steering wheel and buckles will be untouchable, and you need two or three minutes with the windows down before the vents are blowing genuinely cold air rather than warm air.

Once it's there, front vent output is strong and holds up in traffic. There are no rear air vents in this car, though, and that's worth knowing before you book. Anyone in the back gets cooled second-hand through the gap between the front seats, which is fine for kids on a school run and much less fine for two adults in the high forties. If your week involves rear passengers every day through August, that alone is a reason to look at something a size up.

Who we'd hand the keys to

Rent it if you're one or two people, based in the city, and your driving is the commute, the shops, the gym and an airport run at either end. On that brief the MG3 is one of the easiest cars we run, and it's cheap to keep moving. We rent it from 18, which most desks in Dubai won't do before 21, and the 300 km a day included covers that kind of week with room left over. Anything beyond it is 50 fils a kilometre.

Rent something else if there are four adults and real luggage involved, because the back seat and the 293-litre boot will both be working harder than anyone enjoys. A compact sedan solves that for a small jump in rate. The same goes if you're carrying passengers in the back through the hottest months, where the missing rear vents stop being a footnote.

And if the itinerary includes soft sand or the rougher approaches around Hatta, this is the wrong car entirely. Front-wheel drive and 132 mm of clearance are a city specification, and no amount of careful driving changes that. Book a crossover for that week and come back to the MG3 for the one that's all tarmac.
