The MG3 2024 is a city car that happens to be tolerable on the motorway, and that fit covers what most renters here actually do all week. One tank should cover most of your week

The combined rating is 6.6 litres per 100 km, and against a 45-litre tank that works out to roughly 680 km between fills. A normal week of commuting, errands and a couple of airport runs lands inside that, so one visit to the pump is the realistic expectation rather than the optimistic one.

City driving in summer will do worse than the combined figure, and you should budget for it. Long signals, stop-start traffic and an air-conditioning compressor working flat out all take their cut. Call it closer to eight litres per 100 km in July and you won't be surprised by anything.

Salik is the cost people forget to plan for. You pay the tolls, they're charged per gate, and a route that leans on Sheikh Zayed Road can pass through several in a single day. Any RTA fine picked up during the rental comes back to you too. If an alternate route skips a gate or two without adding half an hour, it's worth taking.

What actually fits, and where it parks

The boot holds 293 litres. In practice that's one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two cabin cases and a week of shopping. It is not two large cases and a pushchair, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with a suitcase on the back seat. Drop the rear bench and it becomes a genuinely useful load space for a flat-pack run.

Four adults will fit. The two in the back will want the front seats moved forward, and on anything longer than a cross-town trip they will mention it. With two kids in the back instead, the packaging is fine, and note that child seats are required for under-fours here, so factor one in when you book.

At 4,113 mm long and 1,797 mm wide it drops into the tight bays in older multi-storey car parks without the door-opening negotiation a mid-size sedan demands. U-turns are easy and reversing into a gap takes one attempt. Ground clearance is 132 mm, which is low even by hatchback standards. Community speed bumps are no problem at a sensible speed. Steep basement ramps in the Marina towers want a slow, straight approach rather than an angled one, and nobody has ever regretted taking a ramp too gently.

The first ten minutes after it has been parked in the sun

A small cabin is the one thing in your favour in August. There's less air to cool, so the MG3 pulls down quicker than a seven-seater does. Quicker is not the same as quick. Leave it uncovered at midday and the wheel, the buckles and the dash will all be too hot to touch, and it takes two or three minutes with the windows cracked and the fan on high before the air coming out is genuinely cold.

Front vent output is strong once it gets there. There are no rear vents, so anyone in the back is cooled second-hand through the gap between the front seats. That's fine for kids on a fifteen-minute run and less fine for two adults in the high forties. Park in shade when you can, and a cheap windscreen shade will do more for your comfort than anything on the options list.

Who should rent something bigger instead

Rent the MG3 if you're one or two people, based in the city, and your week is errands, commuting and the occasional airport pickup. On that brief it's hard to beat, and the 300 km a day we include covers that kind of week comfortably, with anything past it at 50 fils a kilometre. We also rent it from 18, where most desks in Dubai won't hand over keys before 21.

Skip it if you're four adults with real luggage. The boot won't take it and the back seat won't enjoy it. Size up to a sedan and spend the difference happily.

Skip it too if the week is mostly long highway distance. The CVT and 109 PS are tuned for city speeds. It sits at 120 without complaint, but a confident overtake at that speed needs a plan, and the revs climb and hold in a way that makes the cabin noticeably louder than a sedan's. Doing the Abu Dhabi run twice a week in this would wear thin.

And if anything on your itinerary leaves the tarmac, this is the wrong car. Front-wheel drive and 132 mm of clearance rule out desert tracks and the rougher approaches around Hatta. Take a crossover for that week and come back to the MG3 for the city one.
