An automatic MG3 2024 is about as cheap as a hatchback rental gets in Dubai, and that's most of the case for booking one. The engine, and how it drives

Under the hood is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder making 108 hp and 140 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. There's no turbo, so power builds evenly rather than arriving in a rush, and the CVT holds a steady, settled note once you're cruising. Around town, at 60 to 80 km/h through Marina or JLT traffic, that combination suits the car well. Throttle response is soft rather than sharp, and lane changes and roundabouts don't ask more of the engine than it has to give.

Push it onto Sheikh Zayed Road and merge at 120 km/h and the limits start to show. The MG3 gets up to speed, but a loaded overtake at highway pace needs planning rather than a stab of the pedal, and the CVT lets the engine run louder than you'd like while it works for it. Four adults and a full boot make that climb slower still. None of this is a knock on the car for what it's built to do. It's a city hatch with a small engine, and it drives exactly like one.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

The boot holds 293 litres, the smallest number on this page and the one worth planning a trip around. One large suitcase and a laptop bag go in without a fight. Add a second case and you're leaning on the tailgate to shut it, and a third bag ends up on someone's lap. Two travellers landing at DXB or DWC for a week will get their luggage in without drama. Two couples sharing the car for the same week, one case each, will not, no matter how carefully they pack.

The back seat is more usable than the boot number suggests. Two adults sit fine for a short hop across town, and the middle position works for a child seat or a quick mall run, though three adults across the rear bench on a longer drive is a squeeze. At just over 4.1 metres long, the car is easy to park. It slots into a Marina tower bay or a mall multi storey space on the first attempt, and a U-turn on a narrow residential street takes no real effort. Ground clearance sits at 132 mm, low enough that a steep basement ramp or a sharp speed bump wants a slow, careful approach rather than a confident roll over it.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

This is where the MG3 earns its place in the fleet. MG quotes combined fuel economy around 6.6 litres per 100 km, and while Dubai traffic with the AC working hard will push that closer to 8 in practice, it stays one of the cheaper cars we rent to keep fed. The 45-litre tank is good for roughly 500 km of realistic city driving before a fill-up matters, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one stop at the pump, occasionally two.

The rental includes 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, which covers ordinary use comfortably but adds up on a day trip out to Al Ain. Salik charges apply at every toll gate you cross, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours to settle. The minimum age to rent this car is 25, higher than the 21 you'll find on most economy hatchbacks in Dubai, so check that before you book.

Dubai's midday sun pushes a parked cabin into the high 40s, and the MG3's small interior actually works for you here. Less air for the vents to pull down means the worst of the heat clears within a few minutes once you're moving, not the long crawl a bigger cabin needs. It's a basic AC system, not a luxury one, so don't expect strong rear vents or a cabin that chills the moment you climb back in. Point the front vents at yourself and give it a couple of minutes before you judge it.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the MG3 2024 if cost is what's deciding the booking and your week is mostly city driving: a solo commuter, a couple keeping the budget tight, or an airport run with one bag each. Nothing else in the fleet at this price point matches it for running cost, and the small footprint and light engine work in your favour on tight streets and short hops.

Size up if you're two couples or a family of four travelling with a week of luggage. The 293-litre boot won't carry it, and the back seat gets cramped on a longer drive, so an MG5 sedan or a compact SUV is worth the extra rate. The same goes if your trip involves real Sheikh Zayed Road distance or a run out to Hatta. The modest power means an overtake takes more room than you'd like, and a bigger engine handles that stretch with less effort.

For a straightforward week of city driving on a tight budget, the MG3 2024 does the job for less than almost anything else we rent.
