The CLE 200 is a style-and-occasion car, brilliant for the cooler months and a special weekend, and a poor pick if you need everyday space or you're renting through the summer peak. A drop-top in Dubai's climate

Timing is everything with this car. From late autumn through early spring the weather is the whole point: roof down along the coast at dusk, the corniche, an unhurried run out to the desert edge. In those months the CLE is genuinely one of the best ways to spend an evening here.

In the deep summer it's a different story. With the roof up the cabin is a sealed, well-insulated Mercedes, and the climate system pulls a sun-baked interior down quickly once you're moving, with strong front vents. Roof down in July at midday, though, no amount of AC beats 45-degree air, so you'll be driving closed most of the day and dropping the top only after dark. Rent it for the season it's built for and it shines. Rent it as a July daily and you've paid a convertible premium for a car you'll keep shut.

What it's like to drive

The 2.0-litre turbo makes 204 hp and gets the CLE to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, which is plenty for the way you'll actually use it. This is a cruiser, not a sports car. It moves away cleanly, has the mid-range to overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road without fuss, and settles into a relaxed, refined gait that suits a roof-down evening far better than outright pace would.

With the top down at speed the cabin stays comfortable thanks to the wind management Mercedes builds in, so a coastal cruise at the limit doesn't turn into a buffeting contest. Drop it for an unhurried drive rather than a highway sprint and the car is in its element.

Space and the four-seat reality

This is where honesty matters most. The CLE seats four on paper, but it's a 2+2: two adults up front in real comfort, and the rear pair best treated as occasional seats for shorter trips or for kids. Two tall adults in the back for a long drive will not enjoy it.

Luggage is modest and shrinks when you fold the roof. The boot holds around 295 litres with the top up and 385 with it stowed, which is the figure that decides an airport run. A couple flying in with a large case each and soft bags will manage for a short stay, but pack the boot full and you've no room left to lower the roof. For four people with luggage, or any serious load, this isn't the car. It's built for two and a light bag, not a family holiday haul.

Parking, roads and the rules

At 4.85 metres the CLE is a long car, so older multi-storey bays, tight Marina ramps and packed mall car parks want a moment's thought, and the long doors need room to swing. The low nose means you'll approach steep ramps and sharp speed bumps gently rather than charge them. On the open E11 it's calm and planted, happy to cruise all day.

The usual local rules apply. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are charged to you, and seat belts are mandatory in every seat. A child under four needs an approved seat by law, which we can fit, though the 2+2 layout means a convertible like this is rarely the practical choice for young families.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the CLE 200 2024 if you want a stylish Mercedes convertible for the cooler months, a special weekend, a wedding or a roof-down evening along the coast, and you're travelling as a couple with light bags. For that, few cars feel as good for the money, and the cabin quality holds up the badge.

Skip it if you're renting in peak summer and will keep the roof shut anyway, if you need real rear space or a proper boot, or if this is your everyday family car for the week. In those cases a CLE coupe, a C-Class sedan or an SUV gives you far more usable car. Judge this one by the season and the occasion, not the spec sheet, and it rarely disappoints.
