The roof, and when to use it

Come June through September, the midday sun makes roof-down driving a sweat rather than a treat, and you'll spend most of the time closed up. That's not a fault, it's just the climate, and it's the single thing to weigh before you book this over a fixed-roof car.

Heat, the AC and the closed-top reality

For the months you'll drive it shut, the cabin behaves like any dark luxury two-door left in the sun: hot fast, then comfortable once the climate system gets going. The AC is strong and pulls a baked interior down within a few minutes of moving. Vent the worst of the trapped air through the windows for the first half-minute, then let it settle. A soft-top lets a touch more heat in than a metal roof, so on the hottest afternoons give it a moment longer to catch up, and it gets there.

How it drives

This is a relaxed cruiser, not a sports car, and it suits Dubai well for it. The 2.0-litre mild-hybrid four sends 258 hp to the rear wheels, good for 0 to 100 in 6.2 seconds, which is plenty for a clean overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road. Roof up, it cruises quietly and feels planted at speed. Roof down at lower speeds along the coast, the wind management is good enough to hold a conversation. It's a low car with modest ground clearance, so ease over the sharper speed bumps and take the steep Marina and mall ramps gently.

Space, luggage and who fits

Treat this as a two-seater that happens to have a back seat. Up front, two travel in real comfort. The rear is fine for short hops or for kids, but adults won't want a long stint back there, especially with the roof up and the sloping line overhead. The boot is the convertible compromise: around 360 litres with the roof up, and less once the folded top eats into the space, so pack soft bags over hard cases and keep it light. For a couple heading out for the evening or a weekend away, that's enough. For an airport run with four people and full luggage, it isn't, and a sedan is the better tool.

A few Dubai basics

Salik tolls run on your rental as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the booking pass to you, so keep an eye on posted limits. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, roof up or down, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit on request. Minimum rental age on this car is 19.
