Picture a Friday evening on the Jumeirah coast road with the windows down, or the top folded back once the heat drops, and you've got the reason most people rent a Mercedes CLE in Dubai. It's a two-door grand tourer, the car that replaced both the C-Class and E-Class coupes, and it's built for the drive rather than the school run. We deliver it to your hotel, villa or office free of charge, with no security deposit to tie up. Our argument is simple: the CLE is a treat car, the right book for a weekend you want to feel, not the sensible pick for hauling four adults and luggage all week.

When the CLE is the right call (and when it isn't)

The CLE earns its keep on the open road and the evening out. Two people, the coast from Marina down to Kite Beach, dinner somewhere with valet parking, the cabriolet roof down after sunset when the air finally cools. That's the brief it nails. The cabin is properly quick and properly comfortable, a long-legged cruiser that's happy at a relaxed 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road and just as content crawling La Mer at walking pace looking good.

Where it isn't the answer: a family of four for a week. The back seats are real, not token, but they're a coupe's back seats, fine for a short hop or smaller passengers, tight for grown adults on a long run. If you need to carry people and bags every day, a C-Class or E-Class sedan does that job better and costs less to run. Rent the CLE for the days you want the experience, not for the logistics.

Coupe or cabriolet

This is the real decision, and it changes the car. The coupe has the fixed roof, slightly more boot, and a tighter, quieter feel at speed. The cabriolet trades some of that for the thing you actually came for in this climate: open-top driving in the four or five months a year when Dubai evenings and winter days make it a pleasure.

Our honest steer is the cabriolet from roughly November to March, when you'll use the roof and not regret it. Through the deep summer the coupe is the smarter book. You'll spend most of your time with the AC working hard and the roof up anyway, so you may as well have the quieter cabin and the bigger boot. The cabriolet's boot shrinks noticeably with the roof stowed, which matters the one time you've got two cases and a folded top fighting for the same space.

Living with it for a weekend in Dubai

Power isn't the question with a CLE. Even the entry petrol four-cylinder is quick enough for anything you'll legally do here, and the AMG-line cars are faster than the roads allow. What you'll actually notice is the comfort: the ride soaks up the expansion joints on the bridges, the seats are good for the Abu Dhabi run, and the cabin keeps its cool fast, which is the spec that matters most when you collect a car that's been parked in July.

Salik tags are fitted and the tolls are handled on your account, so the Marina and Sheikh Zayed gates aren't something you think about. Parking is easy at the malls and hotels. It's a low, wide car, so the steep ramps at some older buildings and a few aggressive speed bumps want a little care, but nothing a 360 camera doesn't solve.

CLE versus the SL

People cross-shop these two, and they shouldn't. The SL is the hardcore convertible, a faster, firmer, more focused roadster that's a genuine sports car with a price and a ride to match. The CLE cabriolet is the grand tourer: softer, roomier, easier to live with for a relaxed weekend, and it'll seat four at a push where the SL is strictly a two-plus-a-bit.

If your weekend is a long cruise to Hatta or down the coast with someone in the back and you want to arrive fresh, the CLE wins. If it's about the drive itself, the noise and the firmness and the badge, and it's just the two of you, the SL is the one to ask for. Most of our renters who think they want the SL actually want the CLE.

Pickup and handover

We bring the car to you and collect it when you're done, anywhere in Dubai, at no extra cost. At handover we walk you through the roof operation on the cabriolet, the drive modes, and the camera and parking aids before you sign anything. The tank's full and we note the level so there's no argument at return. If your weekend extends, message us and we'll usually sort it without you bringing the car back.

FAQ — Common Questions Answered.

Is the Mercedes CLE a coupe or a convertible?

It's both, depending on which body you book. The CLE comes as a fixed-roof coupe and as a cabriolet with a folding soft top, and the two drive differently. The coupe is quieter at speed and holds more luggage, while the cabriolet gives you open-top driving for Dubai's cooler months. Tell us which one you want when you book and we'll confirm what's in the fleet for your dates.

Can I drive the CLE cabriolet with the roof down in summer?

You can, but you probably won't want to in the peak heat of June through September, when even the evenings stay warm. The roof opens and closes in seconds at low speed, so most renters drop it after dark in the cooler months and keep it up with the AC running through high summer. If you're booking in the deep summer purely for top-down driving, we'd gently point you to the cooler season instead. From November to March the cabriolet is genuinely a different car.

Do I need an international licence to rent the CLE in Dubai?

If you're a tourist, yes, you'll generally need your home licence plus an International Driving Permit to rent here. Visitors from certain countries can drive on their national licence alone, and the rules shift, so send us your licence details before you arrive and we'll confirm exactly what you need. UAE residents rent on a valid UAE driving licence. We check this at booking so there's no surprise at handover.

How are Salik tolls and traffic fines handled?

The CLE comes with a Salik tag already fitted, and the tolls you run up on Sheikh Zayed Road or the Marina gates are charged to your booking, so you don't deal with the gates at all. Traffic fines are your responsibility for the rental period and are passed on to you if any come through after you return the car. We'll always show you the charge when it lands rather than adding anything blind. Drive it as you'd drive your own and there's nothing to think about.

Is the CLE good for a road trip to Abu Dhabi or the east coast?

It's one of the better cars in our fleet for exactly that. The CLE is a grand tourer at heart, so a relaxed run to Abu Dhabi or out to the east coast plays to its strengths: comfortable seats, a quiet, composed ride at highway speed, and enough pace to make overtaking effortless. Two people with a weekend's bags fit comfortably, four is tight for that distance. Mileage is unlimited on our rentals, so the kilometres to Fujairah and back aren't something you need to count.
