Parking is the whole argument for the Mazda 2 2020, and in Dubai that counts for more than people admit. We rent this economy hatch from 18, where most desks make you wait until 21, and we'll have it at your door in one to two hours. It's a small five-door automatic that slips into the bays others circle past, sips fuel on a week of errands, and costs little to run. If your Dubai week is mostly solo or two-up, short hops across town with the odd airport run, this is the cheapest sensible car that still feels properly screwed together. Where it runs short is space and motorway muscle, and we'll be straight about both.
At just over four metres long and under 1.7 wide, the Mazda 2 is genuinely easy to place. The tight multi-storey bays at Dubai Mall, the steep helix ramps in Marina towers, the awkward U-turns on a busy road, all of it gets simpler in a car this small. You see the corners, you judge the gaps, and you stop fighting the car for control of the space.
That compactness is also why it's the natural pick for a new or nervous driver, or anyone who hates parallel parking. It threads gaps a sedan has to give up on. The flip side is obvious once you load it, so read the luggage section before you book it for an airport group.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol making 115 horsepower through an automatic gearbox, driving the front wheels. Around town that's plenty. It pulls away from lights cleanly, the gearbox is smooth in stop-start traffic, and 0 to 100 in 8.7 seconds is brisker than the numbers suggest for daily use.
The honest caveat is the highway. On Sheikh Zayed Road the 2 cruises happily at 100 to 120, but ask it to overtake a lorry uphill at speed and you feel the engine working. It's a city car that handles the motorway, not a motorway car. For the school run, the mall, and a relaxed run to DXB it's well judged. If your week is back-to-back Abu Dhabi trips at full pace, size up to something with more in reserve.

This is where a small car asks you to be realistic. The boot holds around 250 litres, which takes one large suitcase and a soft bag, or a week's grocery run, without trouble. Two people travelling light are fine. Drop the rear seats and you free up real space for a flat-pack haul or a bigger shop.
Where it falls down is the four-up airport job. Four adults with four full cases will not fit, full stop. For two passengers and a sensible amount of luggage it's exactly right. For a family arriving with the holiday's worth of bags, look at a larger hatch or a small SUV instead.
The 44-litre tank and the efficient 1.5 mean fuel barely registers as a cost. In normal Dubai use, a mix of traffic and short highway runs with the AC working, expect somewhere around 6 litres per 100 km. That stretches a tank well past 600 km of city driving, so a single fill usually covers most of a week. Petrol here is cheap to begin with, and the 2 is one of the least thirsty cars we hand over.
The small cabin is an advantage in summer. There's less air to chill, so once you're moving the AC pulls the temperature down quickly, and the front vents hit hard enough that you feel relief within a couple of minutes. Park in shade where you can and drop the windows for ten seconds before setting off. This is a budget car, so don't expect rear climate vents or luxury touches, but for a small interior the cooling does its job in the high 40s.
A few local basics. Salik tolls are charged to you as the renter, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you, so watch the speed cameras on the E11. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request.
Rent the Mazda 2 2020 if you're driving solo or as a couple, your week is mostly city errands and short trips, and you want the cheapest car that's still easy and pleasant to live with. It parks anywhere, costs almost nothing to fuel, and the rent-from-18 makes it an easy yes for younger drivers.
Skip it if you'll carry more than two people with luggage, or if your days are spent at speed on the open highway. A family with airport cases wants a roomier hatch or a small SUV, and a high-mileage motorway driver wants more engine. For the city-bound single or couple watching the budget, though, the 2 is the sensible choice and it does the job without fuss.
