Under the bonnet, and what it feels like to drive

The Rio's 1.6-litre four is naturally aspirated, makes 123 hp and 150 Nm, and sends that through a 6-speed torque-converter automatic to the front wheels. In town it pulls away cleanly and merges onto Sheikh Zayed Road without any hesitation, and solo or two-up it holds 120 on the E11 without strain.

Load the boot and the back seat and ask for a fast overtake, and the gearbox takes a beat to drop down before the car responds. It gets there. It just isn't quick about it, and a driver who plans a passing move a little earlier gets more out of the car than one who stabs the pedal at the last second. This is a city hatchback first, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more on the highway.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

At 325 litres the boot is smaller than the sedan-bodied Rio we also rent, and it shows. One large suitcase and a soft bag go in cleanly, but a second full-size case means folding the rear seats down rather than adding it to the boot. That's fine for a solo DXB pickup or a couple travelling light, tight for a family with a full luggage set. Two adults sit fine up front and in the back for a short hop across town, though four adults for a full day is where the rear knee room and the boot both start to complain.

The upside of the shorter body shows up in parking. At just over 4 metres long, a good deal shorter than our sedan-bodied Rio rows, it drops into a tight multi-storey bay or a Marina ramp with less shuffling and swings through a U-turn on a narrow street more easily too. Ground clearance sits around 150 mm, enough for a standard speed bump or a mall ramp at a sensible pace. This is a front-wheel-drive city car, so keep any Hatta or desert plans for a different vehicle in the fleet.

What it costs to run, and how the cabin cools

Kia's own combined figure works out to around 6.3 litres per 100 km, close to 16 km/l, on the 45-litre tank. Treat that as the lab number. Run the AC hard through a Dubai afternoon with the usual stop-start traffic and expect closer to 11 or 12 km/l, which still gets you roughly 500 km before a fill, comfortably a week of city driving on one tank. The rental includes 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 a kilometre, cheap enough that an occasional longer drive won't dent the budget. Salik tolls at every gate you cross and any RTA fine picked up along the way land on you too, separate from the mileage and fuel above.

White helps here more than people give it credit for. It reflects the afternoon sun rather than absorbing it, so the cabin starts from a slightly lower baseline than a black or grey car left in the same spot. The small hatchback body does the rest once the AC kicks in, since there's less air for the front vents to pull down, and the worst of the heat clears fast once you climb back in and get moving. Expect single-zone manual climate control rather than a dual-zone setup, and the rear vents won't be strong at this price point, so a full car on a summer afternoon asks a bit more of the air reaching the back seat. Parking in shade or underground when you can still does more for cabin comfort than the paint colour alone.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent this Kia Rio 2021 if you're one or two people who want the cheapest automatic on our economy row and don't need a big boot: the commute, the grocery run, an occasional airport pickup with light bags. The minimum age here is 25, so it sits in our standard economy bracket rather than the younger-friendly cars we also carry.

Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're regularly packing for four adults or carrying more than one full-size case, the boot and the back seat both run out of room fast, and our sedan-bodied Rio, with its bigger 387-litre boot, or a rival like the Picanto, Spark or MG3 in this same value bracket, will suit you better. And if your week leans on fast highway overtaking rather than steady city driving, 123 hp starts to feel like a ceiling rather than a quirk worth working around.
