The drive, and where it's happy

Under the bonnet is a 1.3-litre petrol making 84 hp through an automatic gearbox, driving the front wheels. Around town that's a good match. It pulls away cleanly from lights, the steering is light, and the automatic means Dubai's stop-start traffic never becomes a chore. On Sheikh Zayed Road it'll hold the limit comfortably, though there isn't much in reserve past that, so plan an overtake on the open highway rather than expecting an instant kick. Treat it as a town car that copes with the motorway when it has to, and it'll suit you fine.

At under 3.6 metres long the Picanto turns parking from a hunt into a non-event. The narrow multi-storey bays where a sedan needs three attempts take the Picanto first time, the spiral ramps in Marina towers are no trouble, and a U-turn on a wide road is a single sweep. The flip side is the 141 mm of ground clearance, which is on the low side, so ease over the harsher speed bumps and the raised lips at mall entrances rather than charging them.

Space, seats and luggage

Here's where the savings come with a catch. The boot is 255 litres, enough for one large case and a soft bag, or a couple of cabin cases plus the weekly shop. Drop the rear seats and it opens to 1010 litres for a one-off bigger load, at the cost of the back row. It seats five on paper, but in practice two travel comfortably up front and the rear is best for kids or two adults on a short trip. Arriving at DXB or DWC with four adults and full suitcases, this isn't the car, and we'll point you at a sedan instead.

Keeping cool when it's 45 outside

Cabin cooling is the test that matters from late spring onward, and a small car has a quiet edge: less air to chill.
