What you get for the money

The Picanto's 1.2-litre engine makes 84 hp, sent to the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic rather than the CVT some small-car rivals now use. It's an older-style gearbox, and you feel that in a slight pause when you plant the accelerator hard, but around town at 40 to 60 km/h it shifts cleanly enough that most renters never notice. This isn't a car built for pace. It's built to be the cheapest sensible automatic on our lot, and it earns that spot.

Kia quotes combined economy around 16.4 km per litre. Expect less than that once the AC is working through a Dubai afternoon and you're doing the stop-start of Downtown or JLT traffic, closer to 11 or 12 km/l realistically. Even at that real-world number the 35-litre tank still covers most of a week's errands on a single fill, and topping up a tank this size costs a fraction of what a mid-size sedan takes. If keeping the week's running cost down is the whole point of your booking, the Picanto is doing exactly its job.

Room for people and bags

Be honest with yourself about what this car is for before you book it. At 3,595 mm long, the Picanto is shorter than almost anything else on our lot, and the 255-litre boot reflects that. It takes one cabin-sized case and a backpack comfortably. A second large suitcase means someone's holding it on their lap, so if you're two people arriving at DXB with a week's luggage each, look at a bigger hatch or a small sedan instead.

The back seat suits kids or a short hop for a friend, not two adults on a cross-town trip. Front seat space is fine for taller drivers, and that's really where this car is meant to be occupied. What you get in exchange is easy parking, and it's the kind that actually shows up during the week rather than in a brochure. At 1,595 mm wide, the Picanto slots into the tightest Marina tower bay or mall multi-storey spot without a second attempt, and a U-turn on a narrow street is a non-event. Ground clearance sits around 150 mm, enough for ordinary speed bumps at a sensible speed, though sharp mall ramps still deserve a slow approach the way they would in any low hatchback.

The small cabin also cools fast, which matters more than it sounds like it should in a Dubai July. There's less air in here to chill than in a mid-size sedan or an SUV, so the front vents pull a baked interior down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of climbing back in. Don't expect rear vents or a second climate zone. This is single-zone, manual air conditioning, basic but effective for a car this size.

The mileage math, and why it matters here

This is the one place the Picanto's policy differs from most of our fleet, so read it before you book rather than after. The allowance is 2,000 km for the whole rental, not per day. On a short three or four day trip that's more room than you'll ever use around the city. Book it for a full month, though, and 2,000 km works out to under 70 km a day on average, tighter than a daily allowance would feel if your routine includes a longer commute or regular drives out toward the coast.

Extra kilometres cost AED 1.0 each once you're past that limit, roughly double what some of our other economy cars charge per extra km. It's not a number that should worry a renter doing school runs, the office and the weekend mall, but it's worth doing the arithmetic if you're planning a long-term booking with real daily mileage. As with every car we rent, Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the booking are the renter's responsibility, and that's the same regardless of which car you choose.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Kia Picanto 2024 if you're a solo renter, a couple, or a young resident who wants the cheapest capable automatic on the lot and doesn't need to carry more than one passenger with real regularity. The rent-from-19 minimum age is genuinely rare in this market, where most competitors sit at 21 or 25, so if you're a younger renter who's been turned away elsewhere, this is one of the few doors still open to you.

Size up if you're two adults with a week of proper luggage, if you regularly carry three or four people, or if your booking involves long daily distances rather than city errands. A Pegas or a small sedan gives you more boot and back-seat room for similar money if space matters more than the absolute lowest price. For fast, loaded highway overtaking this isn't the car either, so treat Sheikh Zayed Road as cruising territory and plan your merges rather than expecting a quick surge.
