Need a small automatic for solo commuting and mall runs, and want the day's mileage sorted before you book? We rent the Kia Picanto 2024 in Dubai with 250 km included every day, which is more road than most city renters touch in a week. This is the cheapest sensible automatic city car on our desk, a tiny five-door hatch that parks anywhere and sips fuel. The whole point of this page is to be straight with you about where it fits. For one person nipping between home, the office and the shops, it's ideal. For four adults and a boot full of airport cases, it isn't, and we'll tell you what to rent instead.
The Picanto is a single-job tool that does that job very well. It's a light, narrow hatch with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine and a smooth automatic, and it's at its best inside the city. Daily commutes, school runs, a dash to the supermarket, a short hop to meet friends in the Marina. On those trips it's quiet enough, easy on fuel, and almost stress-free to place in a parking bay.
What it doesn't pretend to be is a highway cruiser or a family hauler. The engine has 83 horsepower, plenty for keeping up with traffic and pulling away from lights, but it asks for patience once you're past 100. We'll come back to that.

This is where the Picanto earns its keep. At under 3.6 metres long and 1.6 wide, it's one of the easiest cars in Dubai to park. Those cramped multi-storey bays where a mid-size sedan needs three attempts? You'll slot in first time. Mall ramps and U-turns feel like nothing, the turning circle is tight, and squeezing into a gap on a busy street isn't a fight.
Ground clearance is 141 mm, fine for city speed bumps and most mall ramps as long as you take the steep ones slowly. Don't take it off a kerb or onto soft sand. It's a city car, and it knows it.
Every rental in Dubai lives or dies by the AC, and a small cabin is an advantage here. When the car has been baking in a car park and the inside is touching 60 degrees, the Picanto's small volume of air cools faster than a big SUV cabin does. Point the front vents at yourself, give it a couple of minutes, and it pulls down to comfortable on even a high-40s afternoon.
The cold air comes from the front vents only, with no rear vents. With one or two people up front that's a non-issue. Load the back seat in July and the people behind will feel warmer than the driver until the whole cabin settles.
The 35-litre tank and the frugal 1.2-litre engine suit city life. Official combined economy is about 5.6 L/100km, and even with Dubai's stop-start traffic and the AC flat out, you're realistically in the high 6s per 100 km. On a normal week of commuting and errands, that's one fill-up, maybe none if your distances are short. The car clears 400 km of mixed city driving on a tank, often more.
So you're not babysitting the fuel gauge, and with 250 km included per day, you're not watching the odometer either. Salik tolls are charged to you as the renter, and RTA fines pass to you too, so keep an eye on the speed cameras and your lane. Belts on in every seat, as always.
Here's the caveat that decides whether the Picanto is right for you. On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11, this is a small, light car with a modest engine, and it shows. It cruises at 100 to 120 happily enough, but overtaking at speed needs planning, the engine gets vocal, and strong crosswinds nudge it around. Top speed is 159 km/h, but living up there isn't its happy place.
For a short airport run to DXB or DWC with one or two people and soft bags, it's perfectly fine. For a daily highway commute across the emirates, or four adults at speed, you'll want more car.
The boot is 255 litres, which is small, and there's no point dressing it up. One large suitcase plus a backpack or a soft holdall is the honest limit with the rear seats up. A weekly grocery shop fits fine. Drop the rear seats and you free up real space, but then you've lost your back row.
If you're collecting more than one person from the airport with full-size cases, the Picanto's boot defeats you before the road does. That's your cue to size up.
Rent the Picanto if you're one or two people who mostly drive in the city. Solo commuters, anyone who values painless parking, and renters who want a fuss-free automatic on a tight budget get exactly the right car here. It's cheap to run, easy to live with, and forgiving in traffic.
Skip it if your week involves four adults, regular fast highway miles, or multiple big suitcases. For those, step up to a Kia Rio or a Toyota Yaris for more punch and a bigger boot, or go a class higher to a compact sedan if you'll carry passengers and luggage together often. Pick the Picanto for what it's genuinely good at, and it's hard to beat for the money.
