The road from the airport, and beyond

The 1.2-litre engine makes 84 hp through a four-speed automatic, which is honest city power. Pulling out of the terminal and onto the link road, it keeps up with traffic and pulls away from lights without drama. On Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11 it'll cruise at 100 to 120, but an overtake at speed needs a long gap and a bit of planning, and a strong crosswind will nudge a car this light. For the airport hop and everyday city running it's fine. If your week is built around fast motorway miles end to end, you'll want more car.

How rarely you'll stop for fuel

This is the quiet upside that makes the Picanto cheap to live with. The 35-litre tank and the frugal engine give a combined range of up to 583 km, and in real Dubai city driving with the AC working you'll see somewhere around 12 km per litre. At 3595 mm long it slots into the bays a sedan circles past, the tight multi-storey spots in older mall car parks take it in one go, and U-turns on narrow streets happen in a single sweep. The 141 mm of ground clearance is modest, so take the steep mall ramps and harsher speed bumps gently rather than charging them. It's a city car and it knows it.

Heat and the AC after a day in the sun

Land in summer and the cabin cooling becomes the spec you care about most. A small car helps here: there's less air to chill, so after the Picanto has baked in a 45-degree car park the AC pulls the temperature down faster than a big SUV would. The front vents are strong and the controls are simple. There are no rear air vents, which is normal at this size, so back-seat passengers rely on the airflow from the front and wait a little longer on the hottest days. Two people up front are comfortable within a minute of setting off.

A few Dubai rules for the visitor

Salik tolls are charged to you as the renter when you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well, so watch the speed cameras and your lane. Belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat by law, which we can fit if you ask.
