Park it once on a Marina side street and you'll understand the appeal. We hand over the Kia Picanto 2023 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rate, which is more town driving than most renters cover in two. It's the small automatic we reach for when someone wants a cheap, easy second car for a week of errands rather than a road-trip machine. This page is about that one decision: the Picanto is the right call if you're one or two people living and driving inside the city, and the wrong one the moment you load four adults and airport cases or plan to live on the motorway.
Think solo commuter, a couple, or a visitor staying central who needs wheels for groceries, the gym, dinner across town, and the odd run to a friend's place in another community. For that, the Picanto is hard to beat on running cost and ease. The 84 hp 1.25 litre four sends its power to the front wheels through an automatic gearbox, so there's nothing to think about in stop-and-go traffic. Around town it feels light and willing, and the steering is feather-light at parking speed.
What it isn't: a car for the open road with a full load. Two adults and a couple of kids on short hops are fine. Add a fourth adult plus luggage and you'll feel every kilo. If that's your trip, skip ahead to the recommendation.

This is where the Picanto earns its keep. At under 3.6 metres long and 1.6 wide, it slots into bays that defeat a sedan, and it turns inside tight multi-storey ramps without a three-point shuffle. Marina and Downtown garages with narrow bays stop being a problem. Speed bumps and standard mall ramps clear fine on 141 mm of clearance, so you won't scrape on the everyday stuff. It's the car you stop worrying about the second you've parked it.
Be realistic here. The boot is 255 litres, which swallows a big weekly grocery run or one large suitcase plus a soft bag. Two people travelling light, you're fine. Two large hard cases and a third bag, they won't all go in the back, and you'll be folding a rear seat or stacking on the back bench. For an airport pickup with a full family's luggage, this is the car's weakest point, and the main reason to size up.
The 1.25 is genuinely cheap to run. Official combined economy sits around 4.5 L/100km, though in Dubai's heat with the AC working hard and city stop-start, expect closer to 6 in honest real-world driving. Even so, the 35 litre tank gives you a comfortable working range, and most renters on town duty go most of the week between fills. If your driving is light, one tank can cover a short stay outright.
Summer here pushes into the high 40s, and a small cabin is actually an advantage. There's less air to chill, so the AC pulls a parked Picanto down to comfortable faster than a big SUV will. Front vents are strong enough for the job. What you don't get is rear air vents, so back-seat passengers on a 45 degree afternoon take a little longer to feel it. Park in shade when you can and the first two minutes are far kinder.
Around town and on lighter arterials the Picanto is in its element. The catch is Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 at full pace. The car will sit at the limit, but overtaking from 100 upward asks for patience, the engine gets vocal, and a strong crosswind makes a light car feel busy. It's safe and it does the job, but if your week is mostly fast motorway miles between emirates, you'll want something with more in reserve.
A couple of things every renter should know. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are billed to you, not us. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat.
Rent the Picanto if you're one or two people driving mostly inside Dubai and you want the cheapest, easiest automatic to park and run for a week. For that brief, nothing in the class does it better, and the included 250 km a day means you almost never think about distance. Size up if any of three things are true: you're regularly carrying four adults, you need to fit serious airport luggage, or your trip lives on the motorway between emirates. In those cases a Kia Rio gives you the boot and the highway composure, and a small crossover adds the ride height and space. For the city errand-runner, though, the Picanto is the smart, light, low-cost pick.
