Parking decides a surprising number of Dubai rental bookings, and the Kia Picanto 2023 answers that question before you've even left the barrier arm. At 3,595 mm long and 1,595 mm wide, it's about as small as anything in our fleet gets, small enough that a tight Marina tower bay or a cramped mall level barely registers as a problem. The engine, and how it drives

The Picanto's 1.2-litre engine makes 84 hp and 122 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic rather than the CVT some newer city cars use. That older gearbox shows itself in a short pause when you floor it from a stop, but at the speeds this car actually lives at, 40 to 60 km/h through Downtown or JLT, it shifts cleanly enough that most renters never notice. Where it earns its size back is in the last ten metres of any drive. With a wheelbase this short and a footprint this tight, a U-turn on a narrow residential street or a reverse into a single mall bay takes one movement, not three.

Point it at Sheikh Zayed Road and the story changes a little. The Picanto sits at 120 km/h without drama, but it's working to get there, and overtaking a truck in the fast lane needs planning rather than a confident stab of the accelerator. Treat it as a city and short-highway-hop car, not one for a Hatta run or a long cross-emirate commute, and it does its job well.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

Be realistic about what fits before you book it. The 255-litre boot takes one cabin-sized case and a laptop bag without a fight, but stack a second full-size suitcase in there and someone ends up holding it on their lap, so two people flying in with a full week of luggage each are better off in a bigger hatch or a small sedan. Fold the rear bench down and the space opens to 1,010 litres, enough for a big supermarket run or a flat-pack box, not something you'd plan a whole trip around.

The back seat is built for occasional use rather than daily commuting with three in the car. It's fine for a child seat or a colleague riding along to a meeting across town, but two grown adults back there on anything longer than a short hop will start shifting in their seats. Up front is where this car earns its space, with room for a tall driver and a passenger to sit comfortably for the whole week.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

Kia quotes combined economy around 16.4 km per litre, and the 35-litre tank should carry you through most of a week's errands on a single fill even once you knock a couple of km/l off that figure for AC use and stop-start summer traffic. Realistically, expect closer to 11 or 12 km/l around town, still enough range that fuel ends up one of the smaller costs in a week with this car.

The small cabin turns out to be an advantage in a Dubai summer. There's less air in here to cool than in a mid-size sedan or an SUV, so the front vents pull a baked interior down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of climbing back in after it's sat in the sun. Don't expect rear vents or a second climate zone: this is single-zone, manual air conditioning, basic but genuinely effective for a cabin this size.

Our policy on this car is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, generous enough for daily errands and the odd airport run without the arithmetic mattering. Minimum age to rent is 25. As with any car here, Salik tolls and RTA fines during your booking are on you, not on us.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Kia Picanto 2023 if you're a solo renter or a couple who mostly drives in the city, values easy parking over back-seat space, and wants the lowest running cost on our lot. If squeezing into the tightest bay in a Marina tower or a packed mall level is a weekly reality for you, this car makes that a non-event in a way a bigger hatch or sedan can't.

Size up if you're carrying three or four people regularly, if you and a travel companion are both arriving with full-size luggage, or if your bookings involve long daily highway stretches rather than city errands. A compact sedan or a slightly larger hatch gives you more boot and back-seat room for similar money if space matters more than footprint.
