An older small car can still be the smart rental, and the Kia Picanto 2021 is a good example. We rent it in Dubai from 18, deliver it to your door within 1 to 2 hours, and the lower year keeps the daily rate down without changing what the car is actually good at. This is an economy hatchback for one or two people doing city driving, and a few years on the clock doesn't dull that. The mechanical recipe is the same as the newer cars: light, frugal, easy to park. The point of this page is to tell you what you do and don't give up by choosing the 2021 over a later Picanto, and where the car's limits sit either way.
Honestly, less than you'd think. The 2021 Picanto runs the same 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol, the same automatic, the same front-wheel drive and the same compact footprint as the newer cars. It parks just as easily and sips fuel just as happily. What you trade for the lower price is mostly cabin tech and trim freshness: the screen and interior touches feel a generation behind the latest version. For a renter who wants cheap, reliable city transport for a week, none of that changes the job the car does.
If the newest infotainment matters to you, step up a year or two. If you just want a small automatic that's painless and cheap, the 2021 gives you the same driving experience for less.

This is where the small car quietly wins. The 35-litre tank pairs with a frugal engine for a combined range of up to 770 km, and in real Dubai city driving you'll see around 12 km per litre, more like 17 on a steady highway run. In practice a week of commuting and errands often goes by on a single tank, sometimes none if your distances are short. With 250 km included every day and no charge for going over, neither fuel nor mileage is something you'll think about much. That low running cost is a big part of why people pick the Picanto over a bigger automatic.
A 9.4-metre turning circle and a body under 3.6 metres long make this one of the easiest cars to place in the city. The narrow bays in older mall car parks that defeat a sedan take the Picanto in one, the Marina ramps are no trouble, and a U-turn on a side street happens in a single sweep. The 141 mm of ground clearance is modest, so go gently over the steep mall ramps and the harsher speed bumps. It's a city car, and it's content being one.
Be realistic about what fits. With the rear seats up, the boot takes one large suitcase plus a soft bag or the weekly shop, and not a great deal more. The 60:40 split rear seats fold to open up real space for a one-off bigger load, at the cost of seats. For a solo arrival or a couple travelling light from DXB or DWC it's fine. For four adults with full cases, it isn't, and that's your cue to look at a sedan instead of forcing the Picanto to do a job it wasn't built for.
Cabin cooling decides a Dubai rental in summer, and a small cabin helps. After the car has baked in a 45-degree car park, there's simply less air to cool, so the AC pulls the temperature down faster than a big SUV would. The front vents are strong, and within a minute or two of moving it's comfortable up front. There are no rear vents, which is standard at this size, so back-seat passengers rely on the airflow forward and wait a little longer on the hottest days. For one or two people, it's a non-issue.
The motorway is the honest caveat. With 84 hp the Picanto gets up to 100 and cruises there happily, but overtaking at speed on Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11 needs a long gap and some patience, and a strong crosswind moves a car this light. For the occasional airport run or a short motorway link between areas, that's perfectly acceptable. For a daily high-speed commute across the emirates, you'll wish for more car, and a larger sedan is the better book.
Salik tolls are charged to you as the renter at the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you too. Belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat by law, which we'll fit on request. None of it is specific to the Picanto, but it's the part of a rental people forget until the bill lands.
Rent the Picanto 2021 if you want the Picanto experience for less, and you're one or two people doing city driving who don't mind older cabin tech. You get the same easy parking, the same low fuel bill and the same fuss-free automatic at a friendlier rate. For commuters and light city use it's a genuinely sensible pick.
Choose a newer year if up-to-date infotainment matters to you, and size up to a sedan or small crossover if you'll carry four adults, haul real luggage, or live on the highway. For cheap, painless town driving, though, the older Picanto still does exactly what it's meant to.
