What the Picanto is actually for

Think of a typical Dubai week with this car: the drive to work, a supermarket run, dropping someone at a metro station, the occasional evening out. For all of that, the Picanto is close to ideal. It is small, the automatic gearbox does the thinking in stop-and-go traffic, and you are not paying to move a tonne of metal you do not need.

Where it stops being the answer is on the longer, heavier days. Four adults plus their bags, or a 90-minute motorway slog to Abu Dhabi. The Picanto will do those things, but it will not enjoy them, and neither will you. If that is your week, size up to a sedan or a small crossover and read no further.

The numbers that matter

The source page lists the engine as 1.3L, but the 84 hp automatic Picanto is Kia's 1.2L MPi unit, so that is the figure we use throughout. None of the rest of the spec sheet depends on the badge.

Fuel, range and how often you will stop

This is where the older small car earns its keep. At around 5.0 litres per 100 km the Picanto sips, and on a 35-litre tank you are looking at roughly 600 to 700 km of mixed driving before a station, less with heavy AC use in stop-and-go traffic. A commuter doing the 250 km a day included with the rental will fill up maybe once every two or three days. Fuel is the cheapest part of running this car, and that is the main reason to pick it over something larger for pure town use.

Heat, AC and a small cabin

A small cabin is a real advantage in summer here. When it is 45 degrees outside and the car has been baking in a mall car park, there is simply less air to cool, so the Picanto's AC pulls the cabin down to comfortable faster than a big SUV would. The front vents are strong. Be honest about the back, though. There are no rear air vents, so a rear passenger relies on cold air drifting back, which is fine for a short hop and less so in stationary traffic. For one or two people up front, the cooling is genuinely good.

Parking, U-turns and city manoeuvres

At 3.6 metres long this is one of the easiest cars in Dubai to place. Tight multi-storey bays that defeat a sedan, awkward U-turns on internal roads, the squeeze into the last spot in a packed Marina car park, the Picanto shrugs all of it off. The 141 mm ground clearance is normal small-car height, so take speed bumps and steep mall ramps at a sensible crawl and you will not scrape.

On Sheikh Zayed Road

The Picanto is happy in the city and competent, not eager, on the highway. With 84 hp it cruises fine at 100 to 120, but the overtaking punch fades as the speed climbs, so leave room and plan your moves rather than rely on a quick burst. For short airport runs to DXB or DWC it is perfectly adequate. For a daily long-distance commute at highway speed, you would want more engine.

The Dubai rules to keep in mind

Salik tolls are billed to you as the renter, so every gate you pass is on your account. Any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well, so watch the speed cameras. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat. None of this is Picanto-specific, but it is the part renters forget until the bill arrives.

Boot space and the luggage question

The 255-litre boot takes one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two cabin cases and a backpack, and that is about the ceiling. Fine for a couple's weekend or a solo traveller's airport run. Not fine for four people flying home with full check-in bags. If that is your trip, step up a class rather than wrestle cases onto the back seat.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Picanto 2020 if you are one or two people who mostly drive in the city, want the cheapest easy automatic on offer, and care about a small fuel bill and effortless parking. For a commuter or a short-stay visitor doing town errands, it is hard to beat on running cost.
