Kia Picanto 2020 - start from 81 AED / day

The Kia Picanto 2020 is the lowest older-year automatic rate we run in Dubai, and the question worth answering before you book it is whether the saving is worth the trade. We hand it over across the city within 1 to 2 hours, with 250 km a day already in the rate and payment however suits you, from card and cash to bank transfer or crypto. It's a five-door economy hatch, and on running cost almost nothing beats it. Our take is honest: for one or two people doing mostly town driving, the older year is the smart money. The moment you need to seat four adults or carry a week of luggage, the saving stops paying off, and we'll tell you exactly where that line sits.

Why the older year is the value pick

The case for a 2020 over a newer Picanto is the rate, plain and simple. Mechanically you're getting the same small, frugal hatch, and the things that make it cheap to run, the tiny appetite and the easy parking, haven't changed across the years. If you mostly drive inside the city and the badge year doesn't matter to you, paying less for the same daily experience is the obvious move. Where a newer year earns its premium is on longer trips and heavier loads, and that's a different car for a different week.

Running cost, the reason to choose it

This is where an older small car quietly wins. The 1.2-litre engine is genuinely thrifty, around 4.8 litres per 100 km on the official combined figure, though Dubai's stop-start traffic and constant AC push real-world use closer to 6. Either way it's gentle on the wallet. On the 35-litre tank you'll get most of a week of city driving between fills, and topping up costs little. For a commuter doing the daily run plus weekend errands, fuel is the cheapest part of keeping this car moving, and that's the main argument for picking it over anything bigger.

The source page lists the engine as 1.3L, but the 84 hp automatic Picanto runs Kia's 1.2-litre MPi unit, so that's the figure we use throughout. Nothing else on the sheet hangs on the badge.

Boot space and the luggage question

The boot holds 255 litres with the seats up, which takes one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two cabin cases and a backpack, and that's the realistic ceiling. Fine for a couple's weekend or a solo traveller's airport run. Fold the rear seats and you free up to 1010 litres for a flat-pack pickup or a single bigger trip, at the cost of the back row. For four people flying home with full check-in bags, the maths doesn't work, so check your cases against that 255-litre figure before you commit.

Heat, AC and a small cabin

A small cabin is the one place the Picanto's size pays off in summer. When it's been parked in 45-degree heat, there's simply less air to cool, so the AC drops the cabin to comfortable faster than a big SUV manages. The front vents are strong and do the job within a couple of minutes of pulling away. Be realistic about the back, though: there are no rear vents, so a passenger behind relies on cold air drifting through, which is fine on a short hop and slower in stationary traffic. For the two up front, the cooling is genuinely good.

Parking and city manoeuvres

At 3.6 metres long and just over 1.5 wide, this is one of the easiest cars to place anywhere in Dubai. Tight multi-storey bays that defeat a sedan, awkward U-turns on internal roads, the last gap in a packed Marina car park: the Picanto shrugs all of it off. The 141 mm of clearance is normal small-car height, so crawl over the steeper speed bumps and mall ramps and you won't scrape on the everyday stuff.

On the highway, honestly

The Picanto is happy around town and merely competent above it. With 84 hp it'll sit at 100 to 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road without complaint, but the overtaking punch thins as the speed climbs, so leave room and plan your moves rather than count on a quick burst. The 12.5-second 0 to 100 tells the story: brisk enough for the city, modest on the open road. For short DXB or DWC airport runs it's perfectly adequate. For a daily long-distance commute at highway speed, you'd want more engine.

The Dubai rules worth a line

Salik tolls land on you as the renter, so every gate you pass is on your account, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit if you ask. None of it is Picanto-specific, but it's the part renters tend to forget until the statement arrives.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Picanto 2020 if you're one or two people driving mostly inside the city and you want the lowest older-year automatic rate we offer, with easy parking and a small fuel bill to match. For a commuter or a short-stay visitor on town duty, the value is hard to argue with. Skip it if you regularly carry four adults, haul real luggage, or spend most of your driving above 100 on the motorway. For those weeks, a small sedan or a compact crossover is the better spend. Booked for the right job, this little Kia is the frugal, sensible pick.
