The difference you pay for is refinement. The QX80 rides softer, keeps more noise out, and dresses the cabin in leather, wood and screens the Patrol keeps for its dearer trims. Mechanically it can go where a Patrol goes, but nobody rents one to chase dunes. Think of the four-wheel drive as sure-footed grip on a wet ramp or a graded track to a desert camp, not a reason to air down and go bashing. For that, a Patrol you don't mind scuffing is the smarter tool.

Eight seats, and the room you're paying for

The QX80 seats seven or eight depending on the middle row, either two captain's chairs or a three-person bench. Whichever you get, the space is the reason to book this car. The front and middle rows are generous, so four or five adults travel in real comfort on a long day.

The third row is the honest surprise. In most big SUVs the back bench is a place you send children for twenty minutes. Here an adult can sit across town without folding themselves in, and the middle row slides and tips to open a clear way back, so climbing in and out isn't a wrestling match. On a group airport run or a dinner across the city, nobody loses the argument over the back seat.

Luggage asks for a little planning, as it does in any three-row SUV. Behind the last row you get around 470 litres, enough for a proper run of soft bags but not a wall of hard cases with all eight seats up. Fold one side of the third row and you free a long load bay for suitcases while still seating six. Drop the whole rear row and it opens to roughly 2,690 litres, which swallows a big family's week of luggage. The only day it bites is the rare one when you need every seat and full cases at once, and for most trips that day never comes.

On the road, and what the V8 drinks

The bill for that muscle is fuel. Infiniti's combined figure sits around 15 to 16 litres per 100 km, but a real Dubai week of traffic lights and full AC pushes it closer to 17 or 18. The 98-litre tank gives a fair range between fills, though over seven days the fuel is real money, so budget for it rather than round it off. Mileage is the other number to watch. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre over, which covers city errands and airport hops without a thought and only wants a tally before a full day out to Abu Dhabi and back. Salik tolls during your rental are yours, and any RTA fines pass to you as the driver, as they do on every car we hand over.

Cooling it down, and fitting it in

A cabin this large needs a strong system to beat a July afternoon, and the QX80 has one. After hours parked in the open it pulls the temperature down steadily once you climb back in, and the second and third rows get their own vents, so passengers behind you get real cold air instead of whatever drifts back from the front.

Size is the daily trade-off. At 5.34 metres long and just over two wide, tight multi-storey bays and Marina tower ramps ask for the cameras and a bit of patience, so factor that in if your week is mostly city parking. The upside is ride height. With around 240 mm of clearance, speed bumps and steep mall ramps stop being something you think about.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent the Infiniti QX80 2024 if you're moving six, seven or eight people and you want them to arrive rested, or if turning up in something this substantial is part of the occasion. Few cars pair a genuinely usable third row, a big boot and this much quiet in one package. Two groups should look elsewhere. And if it's one or two of you running city errands, this is far too much car.
